PLplot

I tried to compile plplot with the new tarfile (20031227) on Mac OS X
10.3.
I attach below the results of the ./configure command and the end of the
output of make with different options.

A compilation without any specific option does not work.

Compilation with disable-shared does not work.

Compilation with disable-shared disble-dyndrivers works without error.
(Now the configuration step works fine with these options).

However when I try to make the fortran demos in
/usr/local/src/plplot-5.2.1.cvs.20031227/examples/f77
I get the error
/usr/bin/ld: Undefined symbols:
restFP
saveFP

It can be avoided by manually adding -lgcc -lcc_dynamic at the end of the
g77 command

Notice that this error /usr/bin/ld: Undefined symbols:
restFP
saveFP
is also the error that prevents the compilation of plplot without any
"disable" option.
This suggests that, if the configuration step could add the options
-lgcc -lcc_dynamic when the system is powerpc-apple-darwin7.2.0, the
compilation without any "disable" option?

Final remark: the output of the configure command does not write the
command that was typed after command:  . I think that previous versions
did write the command.

This is a common problem I have when compiling graphic programs on the
Mac OSX 10.3
I can solve it manually when I compile the programs with
-lgcc -lcc_dynamic

I am glad you have been able to find workarounds so that you can test the
present series of cvs snapshots rather than working with the old 5.2.1.

Unfortunately, my fortran linking configuration fixes were committed
slightly too late to be in the latest cvs snapshot tarball.  So you will
have to wait for the next one to avoid (I hope) the fortran linking
workarounds you have to do at the present time.  Rafael has suggested on
this list that he wait until I finish all my fortran example extensions work
before he makes another snapshot tarball. It is hard to say, but I think
that may be another 3 days full time.  Of course, he is free to make a test
tarball earlier so we can find out immediately if the configuration changes
work for you for the present fortran examples, but that is up to him.

Assuming the fortran configuration fixes solve your fortran linking problem,
then on past experience with Mac OS X, shared libraries should work (in fact
they should work now if you specify --disable-f77), but there is still one
more bug in get-drv-info on Mac OS X that can only be worked around at the
present time by using --disable-dyndrivers on that platform.  If you want
to help Rafael solve that one, here is what he needs to start (for
a configure without the --disable-dyndrivers option):

"This is a very strange bug, indeed, and I have no clue about its origin.  It
is perhaps a libtool bug that is triggered on the Mac OS X system. Could you
please run:

make 2>&1 > ../build.log

and send the resulting build.log to me?"

I noticed that as well.  I believe that was inadvertently removed by one of
recent configuration changes.  Rafael, could you please put that back in?

The result of the command make 2>&1 > ../build.log (executed in the
plplot source directory) is attached to this message. I hope it is what
you need.
The configure command was:

Concerning the "wish list", coming from PGPLOT, there are a few things I
have not found in plplot, that I found useful:

pgimag, which displays a 2D array as a color coded image (with a scale
that can be specified).  I find it useful to display some simulation
results without using a 3D plot (which may be less readable)
It may be possible to emulate that with plplot, but I have not found a
way yet (I am still far from being an expert in plplot!)

I also appreciated in PGPLOT the possility to get values from a graph in X
Window (the program display a cross, that you can move on the graph, and,
with a click of the mouse you get the current coordinates). I assume that
it would be a much more complex development than pgimag (and it depends on
the driver).

Thanks, but what I needed was the build.log with --enable-shared.  However,
never mind because Keon already sent it to me.

Isn't plshade what you are looking for?  (see

This is already possible with the xwin and the gnome driver.  Just run:

    cd examples/c
    make x01c
    ./x01c -dev xwin -locate

By running:

    ./x01c -dev gnome

it is even better, because the pointer coordinates are continuously shown
while the mouse button is pressed.

I don't know if it even builds in the Mac OS X environment, but you can get
get this same effect by putting a plframe widget inside a TK window, install a
handler to get the locate info, and then display the coordinate info how and
where you want.  Works great.
