Disable CONFIG_HIGHMEM, it's what is triggering the error (which is a bug, 
anyway) and you won't need that option.

Hi group,

I have installed UML on SuSE Enterprise 9.0.

I am able to ssh to host from UML thru TUNTAP and I also I am able to 
communicate between UMLs thru switch daemon.

Now the problem is, I am unable to telnet/ssh to UMLs  directly from the 
local LAN. I am not sure as to how to go about.

Can you please suggest a solution to relsolve this.

You'll need to activate routing on the host, and to assign each guest an IP 
address (clearly you've already done that).  For a simple setup proxy ARP 
is the easiest way to let outside machines know where to send packets 
destined for the guests, and that's discussed near the end of the section 
on tuntap.

Is there a way to boot the UML with KDE or GNOME(SuSE 9.0) environment.

I googled for "booting uml through GUI enviroment" on internet and didnot 
find much relevant information on this.

Please extend your help on this.

That is probably because you missed some features in X that are already there 
and do not have much to do with UML. 
X already allows you to display programs running on a different computer. That 
different computer can also be an UML instance. The simplest way to get this 
to work would probably to 
1) get an UML instance running
2) set up networking between UML and the host
3) set the DISPLAY variable on the UML to point to the host
4) have the host X server accept the incoming connections

you can now start any program iin your UML and it would display on your host. 
That program could also be startkde, although you might see some strange 
things if you already have a detktop running. Xnest might help you there. 

As you see, this does not involve any special UML tricks. 
If you meant something else, like starting an UML instance from your desktop,
I suggest you can find more targetted help at linuxquestions.org.

Yes, Xnest is a good solution, and umlbuilder (which I fear however only works 
with old RPM-based distros) did the necessary setup...

The first thing is that you shouldn't use that patch - it's an old version and 
it has many known bugs. The official location for up-to-date SKAS patches is 
my homepage (see signature).

This is surely a version mismatch, yes.

Try to use the appropriate patch from my homepage (likely not the one for 
2.6.7, I've had to release an updated patch for almost every 2.6 release), 
but there's no guarantee they'll apply on a distributor kernel (as opposed to 
kernel.org kernels).

Moreover, the current stable version of the patch is V8.2 (all other ones have 
known bugs), and the earliest kernel it supports is 2.6.11.

I kind of doubt that SuSE 9.0 ships a stock 2.6.7 kernel.

I am currently working on backup application which portable

On Linux, windows and MAC-Osx .

 

While taking the backup I want to exclude those files 

Which are open.

  

In Linux lsof uses   /proc/<pid>/fd  directory  to list 

Open files.

 

In windows how to check whether a file is already Open or not. 

Is there any API for this checking or file property to check?

If all you're trying to do is display X clients on the host X server,
why not just use SSH with X11 forwarding instead?  Much cleaner.  If you
need xdmcp and want to export the entire desktop session, then make sure
that:

a. Your firewall isn't blocking access
b. the X server is configured to listen to TCP connections on port 6000
(by default, on almost all recent distros, this is turned off for
security reasons)

Dear Mr Mathew Brown,

thanks for the input.
I am not familiar with ssh sessions, yet.
I solved the problem. As you said in b) topic, my host x server
had the "accept tcp connection" flag turned off. I just turned it on.
Now i can use uml with graphic interface.
I use xnest to confine the entire graphic virtual console inside a host window.

One problem the i am facing is the low performance.
With browsers and text editor everything is fine.
But, when i start an ethereal live package capture session the things
begin to deteriorate. It arrives at a point that the xnest window must
be close by me.
The window manager and all the gui components stops to answer.

I must do some research to find out what is going wrong.

I am using the icewm window manager.

Is there any member of the list who had tried something like that ?
Xnest + ligth wndow manager + ethereal works fine for everybody ?

Hi Folks,

I'm trying to get started with UML. I'm currntly blocked at the networking level.

The first thing that I noticed is that bringing up eth0 failed. Is that normal?

Then when enter the following command: ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.253 up
 i get the following error message:


SIOCSIFADDR: No such device
eth0: unknown interface: No such device
eth0: unknown interface: No such device


Any idea? The host OS is centos5 (uname -r: 2.6.18-53.1.19.el5).

I have even trued to rebuild build the kernel but it didn't help.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks for answering. I don't quit get your question. If you mean the shell, then I'm using the default UML shell which I guess is bash.

If you mean the commands I entered the here is the sequence of commands I used following the how to:


First trial:

Host> eth0=tuntap,,,192.168.0.254
UML> ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.253 up

Answers 
Host> No answer
UML>

SIOCSIFADDR: No such device
eth0: unknown interface: No such device
eth0: unknown interface: No such device


Second trial, entered both commands on UML. Result was the same.

I installed UML following the procedure described on: http://user-mode-linux.sourceforge.net/

I suspect that this error message is because UML couldn't initialize eth0 at boot time. But then i don't know why it didn't.

Please help. I'm so desperate.

That's not right. You're just setting $eth0 in your shell to that
value, hence there's no output. I made that mistake.

By UML command line, I mean the comand you used to execute the UML
instance .. e.g.:

./linux ubd0=root_fs eth0=stuff-here

see the eth0 bit? that's where it should be.

Thanks again. I see what you mean. here is my command line argument for starting UML now:

 ./linux-2.6.24-rc7 ubda=FedoraCore5-x86-root_fs mem=128M eth0=tuntap,,,192.168.0.254

Right now what I have is the followinge rror message:

SIOCSIFFLAGS: Operation not permitted


I get it first while the machine is booting and second when I try to run  "ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.253 up" at the guest shell. In both guest and host, I am root.

I found on the web that this might be related to permissions issue related to /dev/net/run. I changed the permission of this file in the guest machine to 777. Still, it didn't solved my problem.

Any further idea?

Umm, it's the host's /dev/net/tun that's being used for networking,
not the guests.

Hi Jeff,

i changed the priority of the host /dev/net/tun to 777 and it didn't solve my problem. I noticed that one error message while booting is:

modprobe: FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.24/modules.dep: No such file or directory

Might that be the problem?

No.

Did you notice this:

That would be the problem.

You need the uml_utilities installed.
