Search the archives of the uml-devel ML(they are officially on sourceforge,

The thread "[uml-devel] Creating virtual consoles on the fly" explains
thouroughly the various solutions. If it's not complete, post a reply in that
In short, from an existing command line, run setsid mingetty <new tty device>,
i.e. if there is nothing on tty8(without devfs):
setsid mingetty tty8
This way of doing things is always valid. Be sure that Uml can use tty8(i.e.
setup it as explained in http://user-mode-linux.sourceforge.net/input.html;
normally it's done automatically).
If you want to do it from mconsole, I'm writing a little, non intrusive patch
to add the "exec programpath args" command to mconsole; then you would have
to type at the mconsole
exec /usr/bin/setsid mingetty tty8
This is currently for 2.4.22-3um, but not difficult to backport(for a little
detail it will have a reject on anything older) if needed. However it seems
Jeff Dike doesn't like it for mainline because you can simply login and run
the command instead of using mconsole, so it probably won't get merged.
