What you'd need to do to test this is:
/usr/sh -c "\cd /home/john/sub1 && ls"
That should list the contents of sub1.
You might also just try "ls -l here" as your compile command in j. If
things are working correctly, that should give a one-line directory
listing for the file in the current buffer.
