The later em8300 kernel modules (from 0.11.0 IIRC) register themselves
as the next free dsp device. So if you have one regular soundcard at
/dev/dsp0, /dev/dsp1 should be your dxr3. Set audio.oss_device_num to 1
and xine should use the dxr3 without any symlinking.
(Of course, audio.a52_pass_through must be enabled for digital
passthrough as well.)
Btw, I have set up a page to help users get their dxr3 running with xine
