Haven't looked into it, but my guess is that because the reiserfs
data structure is such that metadata is located all over the block
device, while ext2/3 has the metadata in the same location. If you
do any significant amount of deletes/creates with reiserfs, it could
happen anywhere in the device, while ext2 will normally re-use the
same space over again.
