No - it's a box that's used for other things so I'm running our stock
production kernel on it, which is 2.2.19-SuSE-somewhere-around-may-last-year.
If I'm going to change, it is to 2.4 which will likely solve my problems
because I have a tun/tap setup working already.

Stuff going in there. It's a sort of black hole, it seems :-)

If I've done everything right (I sure hope so, I just have used Linux for
barely 10 years ;-)), I tend to agree with you. I'll try to find out what, if
anything, SuSE has done to the ethertap/netlink stuff.
