I started by learning how ecore, evas, and ebits worked. (By modifying
the elibs_examples that are out there somewhere). I wrote a little ebits
based mixer application and then an xmms control application. Then I
started looking through the e code and learning how it all worked.

So, i'd say that learning the ecore and evas api's are the place to
start.

Check out the SPLIT branch from cvs and start reading through the e
stuff there (its much less than what's in head, as the fm stuff has been
removed).

That depends on how you want to contribute. IF you
mean by working on the code the first thing to do
would be to check out the code from CVS and start
learning it. A link to the doc for Efsd are on e.org
at the moment and there will be some more
documentation going up shortly (After the rework on
the web site has started). 

Unfortunatly not all of the modules have been
documented so you will have to read the code for most
of them. I am currently working on documenting ecore
so if you would like to write up a bit of
documentation on a module while you are learning about
it that would be appreciated.

Okay thanks.  How do you know the current state of things, is it done,
in progress, etc. ?

Unfortunatly there isn't somewhere that I can point
you to that will tell you where each module is at.
Remember everything is still being design so modules
may change completly or be removed / merge (ie SPLIT)
but the base libraries like ecore..etc shouldn't
change to much. Please correct me if I am wrong on
this.

In gerneral if you float around the mailing list and
#e/#edevelop for a while you will get a general idea
of what is going on.
