No, the only options are to control whether the text is shown.

You should be able to use the size of the socket window. The
_ROX_PANEL_MENU_POS property on the socket tells you which side of the
screen the panel's on.

You can put it on the patch tracker on SourceForge. We probably won't be
able to use the SKIP_TASKLIST thing, due to an API problem in Gtk+-2.0, so
I'm happy to look at other solutions ;-)
Please make sure the patch is up-to-date with today's CVS (lots of
internal changes recently).
