Audacity 1.3 beta will have the facility to use QuickTime Components
installed on your computer to encode files under OS X. The equivalent
mechanism for windows would be the windows ACM (Audio Compression
Manager). Unfortunately as far as I know, iTunes doesn't install an ACM
codec for AAC. Certainly no-one has written the necessary code to access
the ACM from within audacity.
