Unfortunately, USB device support is essentially non-existant on the
PXA270 family of processors.

I've been following some threads over on the arm-linux mailing list
and it seems that the driver has been unmaintained for quite some
time, and consequently no longer works properly.

I was afraid of that, based on what I saw when scanning the threads...

When you say "USB device support" do you mean the Gumstix acting as a
USB device, i.e. USB Client?

It should work as a USB host, correct?
Since that is what the Console VX board provides...

I am trying to get it to work as a USB host by connecting a USB flash
drive, but no luck there either.

Hmm. I've had that working in the past by following this page:

So far, I've succesfully connected ralink wifi, ftdi usb-to-serial,
and a flash thumbdrive.

I did say I was a Linux novice... I thought it might auto recognize the
flash drive... :-)

Just to make sure I fully understand the USB client issue.
There are no current date drivers that allow the XM4 to look like a USB
device weather it is USBNet or serial, etc. Correct?

We had planned on using the Console VX port as the USB Host and the USB
client lines from the XM4's 24-pin flex connector to connect to a host
PC. The USB Client lines are mentioned in the XM4 spec at:
http://docwiki.gumstix.org/Verdex=20

Correct.

The client lines are there, and would probably work fine if the driver
was available. From the rumblings I've heard there are of issues in
the silicon related to USB client support on the PXA270.

Probably your best bet for being a client is to use a USB-serial chip
like the FT232R and connect up to a serial port on the verdex.

is usbclient still kaput on gumstix? FAQ page below seems to indicate this
should work, but i'm not sure which is current info...

FYI: I was able to hook up a flash drive and mount it as a vfat device 

"lsmod | grep usb" gives following:
usb_storage            34948  1 
scsi_mod               84772  2 sd_mod,usb_storage
usbcore               113340  3 usb_storage,ohci_hcd

if i follow how-to USBNet instructions (under
~/gumstix/gumstix-buildroot/howto/*.pdf), i get the following ioctl errors:
[root@... ~]# ifconfig usb0 10.0.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
SIOCSIFADDR: No such device
SIOCSIFNETMASK: No such device
SIOCGIFFLAGS: No such device

dev shows following usb  devices

[root@... ~]# ls -la /dev/*usb*
crw-rw----    1 root     root     189,   0 Dec 31 17:52 /dev/usbdev1.1
crw-rw----    1 root     root     254,   0 Dec 31 17:52 /dev/usbdev1.1_ep00
crw-rw----    1 root     root     254,   1 Dec 31 17:52 /dev/usbdev1.1_ep81

Am I missing something? perhaps in my "make menuconfig"?
