One approach that I have used to obtain this type of effect, is to capture
the zoom bindings (I have done this with the Tk plframe) so that when the
user attempts to zoom, the actual window redefinition request is intercepted
and handled in the client/application code, which then regenerates a new plot
with the new plot bounds.
On modern/fast computers, this proceeds quickly enough that the user
experience seems to be very fluid.
