I prefer MP3 these days because my portable player works with them. =)
Also, I'm not so rigid these days in regards to formats as I've
gotten bitten a number of times in terms of investing in technologies
which were quote better but did not get adopted as a standard (i.e.
Syquest drive versus Zip Drive (though the latter lost out to CDR's in
the end), Minidisc, Zaurus). I've come realize that standard commonly
used formats are the safest to invest in. For compressed music, I
choose MP3 now as it's more ubiquitous and at 192 and higher bit rates
performs adequately compared to OGG in my opinion. On the flip side,
when I go to offer my music, I normally post in both OGG and MP3 so
that those who prefer OGG can have it and MP3 for everyone else, and
also create FLAC files for archiving.
This brings up another issue: I've posted my Rakefile (like a Makefile
but uses the Rake build tool) which on the commandline I can use to
create a CSD from a .blue file, then create a WAV, OGG, MP3, and FLAC
file all in one go. I've largely been happy to use Rake for this, but
would it be useful to just build this kind of functionality into blue?
Not that I would include the compressors though there are Java ones
available, but rather I'd add a few text boxes in Program Options for
WAV, MP3, OGG, and FLAC settings together with metadata information
like Author, title, copyright, etc. (or that can be grabbed from
Project Settings) and handle this kind of thing from blue that you
could do both from within the blue program or from the commandline
calling blue. Thoughts?
As for announcing the project, if you're making the .blue project
available, I'm sure most of us here would love to see how you created
your project and could learn a great deal from it. I'd also love to
include it with blue as an example project.
