The only way to change the marker color is to change the map.
By default all free maps markers are green and all others are red.
This is hard coded and you can't change that.
You can change the map provider with the right button of the mouse.
At the bottom of the popup menu, you can change openstreetmap to google or virtualearth.
yahoo doesn't work and is replaced by openstreetmap.
Do you mean it would be useful to have our proper private set of markers ?

I don't see on the wiki the two tabs you are speaking about.
can you point me on this page ?
I recently modified the geography page and added new fonctionalities which are not currently
implemented in 3.4 and only in trunk.
Effectively there is no information about :
- how to change the map provider ?
- Can we change the marker's color ?
- How to animate the person's life way ?
I'll add this.
