This is a hardwired choice by the vendor. The auto offline test command
is part of the SFF-8035i specification and not even documented as part of
the ATA specifications, but most vendors support it anyway for backwards

might better be described as "Automatic Offine Data Collection", and
"Self-testing" which is part of the ATA standards. Please read the part
