Do you have any information about the speakers? i.e.
manufacturer/brand/model, etc.

I'm going to start with Logitech V20, but hopefully most will act the same.
I imagine there will be differences with the control of the speakers
(volume, ON/OFF) but I'll start with the V20 and go from there

I did some googling and came up with this page:

and there appears to be a module in the kernel configuration which is
currently off

cd gumstix-buildroot/build_arm_nofpu/linux-2.6.21gum
make ARCH=arm menuconfig
  Sound --->
    Advanced Linux Sound Architecture --->
      USB Devices -->
        [ ] USB Audio/MIDI driver

I haven't meesed around with any of this before, so I can't offer much
more help than this.

Thanks for spending time on this. Doing some more poking around I found the
following site that says that the Logitech V20 USB speakers do work under
Linux ( http://www.qbik.ch/usb/devices/showdev.php?id=3972) using a
usb-audio driver based on ALSA's snd-usb-audio. On the ALSA site I even
found references to using ALSA in an embedded environment and what
processors are known to work (
https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/wiki/wikka.php?wakka=ASoC). The main ALSA
site (http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Main_Page) looks like it is
still heavily supported but since I'm a Linux newbie I begin to get lost
here.

What I'm hoping for is that someone with more Linux experience than me could
try adding the ALSA drivers and see if they can even get it compiled and
loaded on a gumstix. If someone can get this far than I can buy a gumstix (I
may do that anyways and hope for the best) and then try the Logitech
speakers.

month that someone might be able to help.

I have a USB phone here (comes up as a USB sound card in Linux) that I
can test this for you with, however I don't have the USB gender
changer here so it will be on Monday or Tuesday.  It should work, but
I can at least try and verify it for you.  I've used it on an ARM926
based system before, for example, and it worked fine there.
