Did you try out the my 'scan' branch? It does almost exactly this. I 
intend to merge it very soon.

That's the source I almost had a few days ago - but I decided this
approach is pretty crappy (and redid it) - because:
1. You're still only operating on paths - e.g. for MetaTracker, Beagle,
Banshee, Songbird etc. this does not make that much sense because they
take away the need for path handling.
2. You introduce a lot of process logic to the library  - whereas on
*nix platforms this is provided to you by default.

Thanks Martin,  The Maya44 was top of my list after a bit of research, so
thanks for the recommendation.  The fact that it is USB class compliant is
very attractive!

Thanks for the heads up about a "software preamp".  I think I am going to
get the BEAT800 in combination with the Maya44.  This would enable me to
play "real" records by enabling playthrough in xwax (it's very simple to do
with the jack implementation - about 4 lines of code, might be more
difficult for other audio backends).

It has phono preamp and switch for setting between phono and line input. 
I use it under Ubuntu 9.04 with alsa and don`t have any problem. It use 
generic usb drivers. Probably its not any low latecy soundcard, but 
works with xwax very well. I also found that card selled under various 
brands here and there over internet. The price for two of this card is 
not more than price for Maya 44 usb, and you get cheap working usb card 
with phono preamp included.

Careful with 'software preamps' -- there's no such thing as a free lunch. 
I've never seen one work as well as in hardware because the accuracy is 
decreased by the soundcard noise. I'd love to be proved wrong.

xwax is already doing a bunch of filtering to get rid of low frequency 
noise. It has to do this, to avoid the rumble when you touch the vinyl. 
The noise isn't generally at these frequencies though. The timecode tone 
is typically 1kHz though, so don't filter there. I even found one 
soundcard where the noise itself had a pure (but low volume) 1kHz tone!

Although I'm not sure about "Announcment: Get rid of that worthless U46DJ 
piece of shit" :-) I've had xwax running nicely on a MixVibes U46DJmk2 on 
Linux; perhaps it's a mk1 or a driver issue causing the problems. Might be 
worth considering as a budget interface with lots of features.

I recently did some research into 4/4 interfaces and wound up grabbing
a Native Instruments Audio 4 DJ. It's reasonably priced, very good
quality, has built-in preamps and comes with a monitor channel.

If you're willing to go with a PCI interface (and put up with the
higher noise floor that implies) the Delta 1010LT I was running for a
few years was very, very good but you need phono amps. In your case
you've got some good enough for timecode.

Hercules also came out with a box called the "Deejay Trim" recently,
which is a 4/6 interface with preamps for $250. Not that much cheaper
than an NI Audio 8 DJ, which has the same I/O loadout, but it could be
worth a look.

As for going phono straight to a sound card and using a software amp,
there's no real reason it shouldn't work... But it usually doesn't
work very well. The signal is usually very noisy, so there's a lot of
jitter. YMMV.

If it's mixing its input through to output in analogue then is there a 
conductor on the PCB which can be cut? That would be lucky. I'm suprised 
they have this feature; I'd have thought it would put costs up, not down.

I have also created packages for Debian and Ubuntu and am in the process of 
trying to get them included in the relevant repositories.

I decided against a menu start, mainly because the app will not launch with 
out command line arguments, such as your preferred Music folder and your 
audio devices.

If you have thought of a good alternative for this, I'd appreciate the 
input.

recent revision (copyright files yet to be written, etc...) at
https://launchpad.net/~stochastic/+archive/ppa and plan on uploading a
cleaned up version to REVU.  Maybe we could work together on getting
this done.

I think you are right about the menu thing, there's too many features,
but maybe a quick startup python interface needs to be written to move
xwax away from the command line...

The command line interface is the main barrier when introducing xwax to
DJ friends, even those who have good technical Windows knowledge.  A
simple startup interface would be a great asset.  Would it be possible
to read the list of audio devices from ALSA when choosing the soundcard?
Configuring asoundrc or UDEV just to get permanent soundcard order in
Linux is difficult for the average user.

Please add this feature!

My package has a few changes from the upstream release to make it more 
Debian (and by association Ubuntu) friendly.

I just have a few minor things to finalize, like some changes to the xwax

Out of curiosity, what does your package look like?  I've got my most
recent revision (copyright files yet to be written, etc...) at
https://launchpad.net/~stochastic/+archive/ppa and plan on uploading a
cleaned up version to REVU.  Maybe we could work together on getting
this done.

I think you are right about the menu thing, there's too many features,
but maybe a quick startup python interface needs to be written to move
xwax away from the command line...

I went ahead and uploaded my slightly polished package to
revu.ubuntuwire.com (at http://revu.ubuntuwire.com/p/xwax )  and I've
already recieved one advocation from the Ubuntu Developers.  It only
takes to advocations before a package is accepted into the
repositories.  Even if you don't want to make your package public yet,
I'd love to see your debian directory or diff.gz file to incorporate
your man page and other ubuntu/debian-friendly tweaks into the
official Ubuntu package.  Thanks.

Sorry, won't work.  SDL_main.h does some macro trickery so that their 'main'
is the real entry point and yours gets renamed and run after they do their
startup.  So it has to be where 'main' lives which is xwax.c.

I don't know much about SDL but I agree it should 'just work', but obviously
my focus was on getting something up and running quickly!  I'll look into
it.

I agree, do you think there's any value in trying to auto-detect whether the
user has jack/alsa/oss installed at configure time?  I just switched it off
in the makefile to get the thing to build, which probably isn't that helpful
in a patch.

As xwax.c is shielded from all the SDL code, is it enough to include 
SDL_main.h in interface.c (where all the SDL code is contained) instead?

A useful patch, as OSS is (unfortuntately) becoming less and less 
relevant. It's probably trivial, but could save me some time if you can 
post it here.

Rather than having OSX-specific patches, is there a cross-platform way to 
call SDL, particularly when this is such a basic operation? eg. is 
SDL_MUSTLOCK broken on the Mac? Since I imagine this is the precise reason 
it exists. It would be great if you can investigate further.

Thanks for your work here. I think it should be possible to update xwax to 
remove Linux-specific irregularities, achieving smooth build on the Mac 
without complicating the build system with OS-specific macros etc..

Personally I prefer to specify manually as xwax doesn't use many 
libraries; auto detection may cause more problems than it solves, and 
create unnecessary runtime dependencies. I do think that making OSS 
optional could be a good step.

This is documented in the SDL FAQ:

   "You also need to include SDL.h in the file that contains int main(int
   argc, char *argv[]) (even if you don't use SDL there)"

As this is by spec, I've applied a patch to include SDL.h (not SDL_main.h) 
to my local repo.
