xine - a free video player

I am running a PIII 500mhz with:
ATI AIW 128 32mg AGP video card
SB AWE64 sound card
Linux-Mandrake 7.2

I have installed xine, but cannot get it to run 
properly. I try to run it and it runs one .vob file
Video_ts.vob, and then I get the following:

(at first I was getting the message: that is was unable 
to open the /dev/dvd, so I did:
cd  /dev
ln -s hdc dvd (what does hdc stand for?))

Then it found the dvd drive and played the file that I 
stated above.   Now the message:

Well, I finally figured out the cause of the pausing problem -
gXine.mCurMRL contains a string that is supposed to be the "current" MRL;
however, it never gets updated. I realized this while watching "Small Time
Crooks" - when I unpaused it, the first MRL in the playlist was the one it
immediately jumped to (right time index, but the wrong chapter). One
solution I came up with was to add a call in xine.c that gui/gui_main.c's
branch callback (I don't remember the name off the top of my head) can
call, to pass the MRL string to and have it copied into gXine.mCurMRL, so
that when the stream is reopened after unpausing (why do we close and then
reopen the stream?), the correct MRL gets opened.

If I use the standard ide-cd interface to read from my DVD (a Pioneer
DVD-ROM ATAPI Model DVD-105S 011, ATAPI CDROM drive), I get the infamous
demux error (both with a regionalized disk and an 'open' one). If I use
the ide_scsi interface, everything works great ...
The only problem is I can't use a raw device ... (You can't link a raw
interface to a scsi device, can you ?) nor I can enable my drive DMA
mode ...

Anybody can give some advice or suggestion about this questions ?

Just install the imliv-devel package if you want to compile a program that
uses imlib!

Btw: Is there any search-mechanism that tells you what package to install
if you need a certain file/program?
For Debian, you can go to http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages, type the
filename in the "Search the Contents of the Latest Release" form and
you'll get the package(s)...

I did a checkout day by day from CVS archive from the 8th of February up til today and found the breaking day beeing the 13th of february. And that happens to be when the code was moved to the new way of syncing. Earlier I thought it had worked with the new code at some point but it never did, the last working version is the one of the 12th of february, and I really don't know how to track it down there since there was such alot of code altered. What's nagging me though is that the old version (0.37) used to say the following when firing up:

ac3 sampliung rate stream 48000Hz, output: 44100Hz (3072->2822 samples)

But the new branch simply says:

audio_oss_out: ao_open rate=48000, mode=4

Does this mean that it doesn't take into account that my audio card can't play at 48000 Hz and therefore has to play catchup every now & then, which in turn causes the slight pauses in video??? What other kind of info can I provide to track this down?
