[Webware-discuss] restated question about mod_webkit and apache 2.0

My first note didn't explain my siutation well. Here is another go at  
it...

I am planning to install the current Webware on a box running SME   
7.2. SME Server 7 uses many packages from CentOS and RPMForge. As you  
may know, CentOS 4 is built from publicly available open source Red  
Hat Enterprise Linux SRPMS.

The standard SME 7 distro installs Apache 2.0. FWIW, the SME  
development team plans to support apache 2.2 in a future release but  
I would like to get Webware going with the current release. I have  
thought about upgrading the apache install on my SME server but I am  
hesitant to move too far ahead of the dev team.

The WebKit discussion mentions apache 1.3. and apache 2.2. The WebKit  
for apache 1.3 version won't work with apache 2.0.

Will the WebKit for apache 2.2 work with apache 2.0? That is, is it  
dependent on 2.2 features or is the reference to 2.2 the highest  
version it was tested with?

Hi Mark,

I have Webware 0.9.2 running successfully on a CentOS 4.4 (Final) box  
with Apache 2.0.52 at work with no problems.

I wrote up instructions to install Webware 0.9.4 on CentOS 5 with  
Apache 2.2.3, and if memory serves, the procedure for both is pretty  
much identical, and it's fairly straight-forward.

I cannot address whether or not the latest version of Webware is  
dependent on any Apache 2.2-specific features, but--having used many  
different versions of Webware on a variety of different platforms and  
OSes--my guess is that its dependencies would be limited to the  
mod_webkit2 module.

Thanks for the link to the setup on Centos 5, Gary. Your instructions  
are very clear and will be very helpful.

I agree that the dependencies, if any, would be in the mod_webkit2  
module. That is the specific concern.

It should work with Apache 2.0 as well. Only the make.bat and dll file 
for Windows are Apache 2.2 specific.

hi,

I'll put off mysql. I just installed Postgres with the necessary 
PyGreSQL-3.8.1.win32-py2.5.exe

I have gone through most of the tutorials in the installation for 
webware, but couldn't find any on database applications. Maybe I didn't 
dig deep enough, but would appreciate if anyone could point out to any 
tutorials with DB access for PostGres.

By the way, how come I can't get mail from your replies to my post? I 
have set the options in the subscription part. I have to come to the 
webware mail archieve to see the replies. :)

Database is supported by Webware itself only in the form of MiddleKit.

But there is also the external "DBUtils" plug-in that you can use with 
Webware (http://www.webwareforpython.org/DBUtils). It comes with a demo 
application for Postgres in the Examples directory.

DBUtils has special support for PyGreSQL, by the way.

Just had a look: You are subscribed, but you chose the digest option, so 
you get only mail once a day. If you have been waiting for longer than a 
day, maybe it got stuck in your spam filter?

Besides the problem mentioned by Seth, there was a bug in 
UserManagerTest - it did not work with a database password.
I have just fixed that in r7158.

Yes, you missed the difference between your path and the example in the
comments: spaces in the path name.  You should be able to wrap an extra
set of quotes around it:
    'mysqlClient':  '"k:/Program Files/MySQL/MySQL Server
5.0/bin/mysql.exe"'
but if that doesn't do it, you'll have to use the short paths, as the
example does.  The number after the tilde can vary, so you should check
them, but it probably looks like the example:
    'mysqlClient':  'K:/progra~1/mysql/mysqls~1.0/bin/mysql.exe'

To check it yourself, in a cmd shell, do this:
    dir /x k:\prog*
and
    dir /x "k:\Program Files\MySQL\My*"

if you put K:/Program Files/MySQL/MySQL Server 5.0/bin
in your Windows PATH.

Hey all -

Calls to forward() will invoke the complete awake/respond/sleep cycle 
within the outer awake/respond/sleep cycle of the parent transaction. 
This means that if a servlet forwards a request to another servlet, then 
the session will be awakened twice and put to sleep twice (or more 
depending on the number of forward calls). This was causing some issues 
in our application because we use database sessions, but it would apply 
to anyone using the SessionFileStore as well.

The issue is that the session is saved after every forward call, and 
might not be in an appropriate state to start another transaction, but 
another request can come in before the parent transaction puts the 
session to sleep for the final time (e.g. user with two browsers open, 
or double-clicking, etc). I have handled this in our application by 
keeping an "awakened" count on the session object, and ensuring that the 
session is only put to sleep when the awakened count is 0, e.g. when the 
final sleep() has been called.

It would be pretty straightforward to integrate the awakened count into 
Webware's default session management options, but that would be changing 
functionality. I can't see how anyone would be relying on the current 
behavior, but you never know ...

Has anyone else encountered this? Do you think it's an issue to be 
handled within Webware or left up to the application developer?

The current behavior hasn't caused problems for me, but I can
certainly see how it could as you describe above. My opinion is that
your solution should be inside Webware because eventually others will
have the same problem and its doubtful that anyone needs the redundant
calls. Also, we could offer a setting or at least a class level
variable somewhere to turn it off.

Hi Ben,

the transaction actually awake()s the session only if it does not exist, 
so it should not happen twice. Can you check that again? But I think 
you're right about sleep(). Transaction.awake() should really increase a 
counter if it does not awake the session because it already exists, and 
Transaction.sleep() should decrease the counter and send the session to 
sleep if it reaches zero. Would this solve your problem?
