I've been looking into this issue and have a single image that now boots on
radeon, nv, intel, and vmware.
The problem is that uvesafb doesn't transfer control over to driver
specific fb like vesafb does. The solution was to compile the kernel with
uvesafb as a module and load it if no device specific framebuffer was
loaded by udev.
I moved the build script creation of the uvesafb video line into
modprobe.conf instead of on the kernel command line.
The issue that I have left is that the splash doesn't come up for
intel/radeon/etc when KMS (kernel mode setting) is on (but the system boots
fine). I can add nomodeset to the kernel command line, but then I lose
widescreen support. I just got the first part working yesterday, so I might
have this figured out soon.
