I have been searching off and on all day for some current and definitive
information regarding the usage of ldap address books in squirrelmail.
Specifically, I have users who wish to have a common address book
between multiple devices as IMAP makes mail common to all their devices.
Given the system in place for these users, ldap would seem the most
appropriate way to accomplish that, but I have come to learn that it may
not be so easy. Thunderbird supports no way for end-users to update an
ldap address book, and I am starting to have doubts if squirrelmail can.
According to http://squirrelmail.org/docs/admin/admin-7.html#ss7.5 ldap
address books are read-only. Normally I would take this as definitive,
but it references version 1.4.4; I don't know how old that is, and that
tells me its old. I am inspired to hope this documentation is not only
out of date, but incorrect.
I also found http://daniel.marczisovszky.hu/projects/index.html which
advertises a writable ldap address book for squirrelmail, but it appears
it was last updated in 2006, and my attempt to install it did not
provide enough (any) results to encourage me to keep trying.
I wonder if anyone might point me at some plugin/documentation that says
a user-editable ldap address book is possible, since I have clearly
failed to find it. Else, if anyone has tackled this problem before, I
would be interested to hear about your methods and success...
