Bruce,

This question seems to be asked far more often on this list than it 
should be, given how much usage for 3ware cards is given on the website 
and in the man pages. Is it worth attempting to detect when this goes 
wrong and printing a 'Could not access SMART information. If you have a 
3ware card, go RTM and use /dev/tweX or /dev/twaX instead' type message 
when it seems somebody is using /dev/sdX?

The newest code in Debian changed from /dev/sde to /dev/twe for 
smartmontools.

See smartmontools FAQ on line.  You can turn this off with -U 0.

The '-a' is equivalent to a number of other flags, which includes '-l'. 
Please see the manual.
