Dear all, A proposal to encode a SINHALA SIGN CANDRABINDU <https://www.unicode.org/L2/L2018/18060-sinhala-candrabindu.pdf> [1] for the purpose of encoding Sanskrit written in Sinhala script has been approved at the UTC #155 <https://www.unicode.org/L2/L2018/18115.htm#155-C22> [2] Regards, Pathum [1] https://www.unicode.org/L2/L2018/18060-sinhala-candrabindu.pdf [2] https://www.unicode.org/L2/L2018/18115.htm#155-C22 -- ෴ ජය! ෴ පැතුම් එගොඩවත්ත Pathum Egodawatta pa...@mo... Hi! Thanks Harshula! I would like to post some details of this effort. The event was a huge success! We had 54 registrations (all privately invited, this email was the only public invite) and 35 turned up. A well balanced turn up with a good balance of gender, interest and background. We had designers, typographers, lettering artists, web devs, a few Sinhala bloggers as well! There will be a detailed write-up of the event soon. We had 4 presentations. - Pushapanda Ekanayake presented his upcoming fonts. - Thareeq Azeez presented the Tamil fonts commissioned by Google Fonts proejct. - Dr Sumanthri Samarawickrama did a roundup of her PhD in Sinhala typography and the process - Kosala Senevitathne presented on Typography of Sinhala Numerals. Covering design challenges of adding Sinhala Numerals to fonts. NEXT Idea is to setup a sustainable community platform for all things type, fonts and language and Lang tech related. We need more involvement from the technology side. Let's see. We have a group of 8 people in the core team helping orgnising. Priamary proejct in hand is this meeting and sustaining the meeting. We setup a rotating hosting system for the event. This event was funded and organised by Mooniak. Next event is hosted by Sumanthri. We already have another team for the June event! For the expenses we will find free or cheaper locations to host. And collect like LKR 100 for tea and refreshments at the event. And we already have a few people who expressed interest in bigger contributions. TASKS Cureently this effort is in early stages. However if you are interested we can identify some of the key technical tasks. Packaging Sinhala fonts for Debian - We have a bunch of lcense compatible open fonts from Mooniak that can be packaged. I discussed this with Danishka a while ago. If someone from the community can please help us setup a system for us to do this. - ASCCI to Unicode document conversion We need a tool that can directly convert old FM Abhay or other ASCII like encoded documents (doc, xlx, docx, odf) to Unicode. If you are interested get in touch. Will keep you posted about this. Cheers, Pathum On Sat, 7 Apr 2018, 15:40 Harshula, <har...@gm...> wrote: > Hi Pathum, > > That's great! That way we can push updates and > improvements to the fonts too :) 1) ~/.fonts/ ($HOME/.fonts/) is a location in a user's home directory where the user can put new fonts and make them available to applications the user runs. There is no need for distro packaging in this scenario. You could create a zip or tarball right now and distribute it with instructions to cp the fonts to ~/.fonts/ & run fc-cache -vf . Installing a distro packaged font makes it available system-wide. This is ideal for UI fonts. It's also useful in scenarios where versioning and dependencies are important. > What are you thoughts on the Noto Sinhala font? > > Noto is the best available UI font at the moment. Please let us know the problems with the Noto glyphs so that we may try to get them resolved. Do you have plans on developing a Sinhala font for UIs? Let me know, I'd be interested in packaging it for Debian. Hi Danishka, Perhaps it's time we look into changing the dependency of the Sinhala language package to depend on Noto instead of LKLUG in Fedora & Debian? cya, # |

Bhashitha was meant to be the one ... but falls short. We currently have LKLUG, GNU Free Font and Noto packaged for Debian. The font would be just another distro package, e.g. rpm or deb. If it is more legible than the other fonts, then we can make it the default by making the Sinhlala language support package require it. cya, # |

Hi, as Dr. Ruwan has pointed out, with the blessings of Font Master (Mr. Pushpananda) ; and seeing the development effort by all concerned, I thought I should put my 2 cents worth This Font was licensed by FM to ANCL (Lake House) for use on Silumina Classifieds (trust it is still in use). to get a closeer character height with the English font we used (when mixed) in print, we scaled the font by 20% (if I remember right). however it was not enough (I felt later). 1. I see that problem on your font, but not as significant as it was - but has room for improvement ... I guess 2. The Sinhala characters in general have curved bases (similar to English characters like 's' 'e' 'o' etc... ) .. if you see closely you will notice the Sinhala characters are slightly elevated than the English characters, to overcome that we did a baseline off set (-5 to -10 RUs if I remember right ) - it is a tedious process as each glyph need this correction. (look at a good English font in a Font development package, you'll see the offset on 'rounded base English characters. 3. incidentally, the accented characters with 'repaya' needs slight elevation adjustments.. and 'mahaprana ja' looks like a made-up (two glyph combined) character where as it has a separate glyph.. similar aesthetic improvements are required... to make it better! in my opinion: overall it is good, but can be improved as this is the best fast reading font in Sinhala (counter part of Times Roman)... you may need to put a little more effort and improve this. Dr. Ruwan can request Dineesha (of Lake House) to get a full chracter set printed on a film (I trust the films are still available) or printed on a laser printer with FM Abhaya to compare (if the laser printer supports Type1 fonts.. old ones did)... (we had quite a good glyph/character set). BTW, I may not be able to help much as I don't have access to Sinhala font resources. This is off my memory.... I may not be accurate in my comments. ( I was seeing your Sinhala charatcers on my chrome book) I greatly appreciate you effort! I guess what Pathum hasn't mentioned, and why Harshula may have asked the 3rd question, is that the font is done with the blessings and active collaboration of Pushpananda who's the owner of the FM Abhaya font. I fully support an initiative to get a better font into the Linux distros: at Gnome level would be best right? Ruvan. Hi All, I bumped into someone that works on i18n at Adobe and I recalled some complaints about Unicode Sinhala support in Adobe products, but I can't remember the details. If you've noticed any problems with Unicode Sinhala layout/rendering in Adobe products could you provide me the following details: Product name Product version Description of the problem How to reproduce the problem cya, # |

Hi All, Feedback has trickled in and opinion seems to dislike the Al-lakuna used in FreeSerif. I've updated the document by including examples of the common Al-Mayanna and Mayanna. http://sinhala.sourceforge.net/files/al-mayanna-miyanna.pdf The goal here is to identify the best way to differentiate between Mayanna, Al-Mayanna and Miyanna (This extends to other consonants, Mayanna is just the example I chose). If you have a particularly good example of differentiating these glyphs, can you please send it to me? Thanks, # On Tue, 2013-01-15 at 11:44 +1100, Harshula wrote: > Hi All, > > Happy New Year! > > We need some feedback on how to maximise the visual differentiation of > Al-Mayanna and Miyanna at small font sizes. > > Could you please have a look at the following: > http://sinhala.sourceforge.net/files/al-mayanna-miyanna.pdf > > Is there any problems/issues/concerns with that variant of Al-Mayanna? > All feedback most welcomed. > > cya, > # |

Hi All, Happy New Year! We need some feedback on how to maximise the visual differentiation of Al-Mayanna and Miyanna at small font sizes. Could you please have a look at the following: http://sinhala.sourceforge.net/files/al-mayanna-miyanna.pdf Is there any problems/issues/concerns with that variant of Al-Mayanna? All feedback most welcomed. cya, # |

The ICU team would like to retire (deprecate/remove) the ICU LE at that point. Steven |

Hi guys, I wanted to update you all on the progress of the Sinhala glyphs/tables in the GNU FreeFont (https://www.gnu.org/software/freefont/). GNU/Linux has started using HarfBuzz (http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/HarfBuzz) for i18n text layout in GNOME and is anticipated to be adopted widely for other desktops and applications. One significant implication of this change is that HarfBuzz aims to be 'bug compatible' with Uniscribe. This means that a Unicode Sinhala font for Windows should 'just work' on GNU/Linux and vice versa. Steve, the maintainer of GNU FreeFont, has put in a lot of effort to make the Sinhala glyphs/tables work correctly with HarfBuzz [1]. He is targeting Level 2 compliance and there's still a bit of work to do. It would be great if folks on the this list could test the FreeSerif font (http://sinhala.sourceforge.net/files/FreeSerif.ttf) on both GNU/Linux and Windows and provide some feedback. At the moment, this is the only FOSS font with Sinhala glyph/tables that works on both GNU/Linux and Windows [2]. cya, # [1] http://svn.savannah.gnu.org/viewvc/trunk/freefont/sfd/FreeSerif.sfd?root=freefont&view=log [2] During the ICTA LLWG meeting on the 16th of December 2011, it was decided that Bhashitha would adopt a FOSS compatible license. However, when I last checked the license change had not been made yet. |
