[Semediawiki-user] Limitation by Accident or by Design?

Hello. I'm the founder of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Wikia, and we adopted Semantic
MediaWiki a short while ago, but we;ve recently come across a limitation in
query searching.

{{#ask: [[ATK::>0]]] [[ATK::<500]] |?Japanese Name |?ATK }}

This is a sample query. By my logic, this should return all articles that
have ATK values that are greater than or equal to zero, and less than or
equal to 500. Instead, I get values that don't correlate, like 1300, 2200,
etc

The Yu-Gi-Oh! Wikia uses a version of SMW 1.0.1 from SVN.

So, is this intentional, or a bug from 1.0.1?

(You have an extra ']' in that query; always look for and fix any 
warning tooltips before running your query.  And always add "|default=no 
cards with ATK less than 501" to queries so you realize a page has a 
query with no results.)

Property:ATK has Type:String, so it's doing a string-wise comparison. 
"1300" sorts alphabetically before "500".  See
<http://semantic-mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Semantic_search#Greater_than_or_equal.2C_less_than_or_equal_comparators>

So you should change the type of Property:ATK to Type:Number.  But that 
won't change all the annotations SMW has already stored in its tables to 
numbers, so you'll initially get no results from this query.  You'll 
need to you re-save (I don't think a refresh or purge will do it) all 
the pages with ATK annotations to pick up the new type value, or run the 
refreshData.php maintenance script.

If you want to stick with Type:String (e.g. Evil Hero Dark Gaia has 
[[ATK::?]], which isn't a number), then you need to make the strings 
sort correctly, e.g. change ATK::500 to ATK:0500.

Hi Steren,

this is very interesting work, and we surely have a closer look. I forward 
this to the user list since I believe more people could like to give it a 
try.

I think I see some potential minor glitches in the code (try it on a Category 
page ;-), but it otherwise looks as if it will be compatible with the next 
SMW 1.2 right away (since you use the store methods for reading data).

It might be a good idea to get a login for the MediaWiki SVN repo and put the 
code in there. This gives you free security fixes, easier deployability for 
users that get their wiki from SVN, and translations to 100s of languages 
(with little effort from your side).

[Semediawiki-user] Inline Queries (Limiting Characters Returned)

I was wondering if there is a way to show a limited number of
characters for the value of a specific property in an inline (ask)
query.  So for example, if I had an inline query that was going to
bring back the value for "longDescription", and the value brought back
would normally be:

This is the long description.  It has many more characters than I
would want to bring back.

And I wanted to just bring back let's say the first ten characters of
the value such as:

This is th

Would this be possible?

I think what you're looking for might have to be done with StringFunctions,
another extension:

http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:StringFunctions

It has a function #sub that returns part of a string.  That would probably
do what you need.

Indeed that would work (use the "template" option in SMW queries to use a 
custom template for formatting query results). 

We could also have parameters (of many kinds) for a single printout statement 
to make some such settings, but I have no good idea for the syntax yet. We 
would need a way to add parameters to an #ask printout line such as "?long 
description", where the general current syntax is:

"?property#unit = label"

So it's not quite clear where to put additional parameters in a readable 
syntax. Other intersting parameters for single printouts would be "limit" 
and "sep" (separator string for multiple values of one property).

SMW 1.2 has the advantage that all sorting uses a single table column the 
collation of which could be set to achieve better sorting. This closely 
relates to the new sort key column -- I will check if we can have some 
parameter for setting this column's collation internally. 

SMW 1.1 uses SMW tables as well as MediaWiki tables for sorting operations. In 
general, I guess that you may need to rebuild table contents to make later 
collation changes take effect.

P.S.: I recall that the "UTF8" option during MediaWiki installation is 
still "experimental" and has nothing to do with the above problem which 
refers to SMW tables only. Using Unicode characters in MediaWiki and SMW is 
possible in any case without special settings.

The below problem was solved now. The basic problem was that no SMW data was 
stored in the database. This in turn was caused by enableSemantics() being 
called mutliple times in LocalSettings.php instead of just once. 

The call to enableSemantics is always needed only once, even if a site is 
accessible via multiple URLs. The server parameter of this function is used 
by SMW to generate URIs in its data export files and should be 
the "preferred" server name. I also extended INSTALL to explain this.
