Yuck, it doesn't look like Linux offers any safe alternative either.
Maybe realpath is only reasonable on BSDs or systems with some BSD

I'd say it's a good idea at least for Darwin, since it avoids having
to figure out the proper case for things the painful way, and PATH_MAX
is actually useful there.
