First, for existing asdf-install users, I don't want to be (indirectly)
responsible for pushing people away from something they might know and
love, as little as I personally love asdf-install, before Quicklisp is
actually finished. I'd rather people jump on their than get pushed, even
if it's gently.
Second, I think most people use asdf-install because how many tutorials
or library manuals mention it, e.g. "To install cl-foo, use
asdf-install." I don't think they find out about it via the SBCL
documentation. Killing it in SBCL unfortunately won't update all those
scattered references. Mentioning portable asdf-install would at least
allow people to continue to use those references.
Maybe there could be a version or two of transition, where loading
asdf-install displays a deprecation warning, before it's fully removed?
