I am running the latest accelerated drivers from nvidia with xvideo.

Perhaps I am mistaken on the card's name, it was given to me by a
friend and the diamond viper 550 drivers work with it and /proc/pci
identifies it as:
VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Riva TNT 128 [NV06] (rev 4).
Am I reading that wrong? Does "Riva TNT 128" identify various chips?

please excuse my ignorance, does ML mean mailing list? and will
setting these registers allow me to use X?
