I would like to add a new interface to player, namely to implement a
3D laser scanner, and some other custom types as well. I know the 3D
laser scanner is very similar to a 2D one, but I think it would be
nicer to have a type for it. Using the opaque interface for these
might just be as much work as implementing a new interface...

Can you give me some pointers how to add a new interface in general? I
know I have to patch player.h, but what else? I saw there was a page
about it in the 2.0 docs, but it was empty.
Would it be better to switch to 2.0 first, maybe its easier there? My
current 1.6.5 setup works, so I am a bit reluctant.
