Have you tried changing the bitrate of the mpeg2 video codec?
Also, have you tried using purely gstreamer containers/codecs (such as
"mpeg2enc" for the video codec instead of ffenc_mpeg2video?

Sadly no, this feature is not yet implemented:

Grouping and linking do not change the appearance of clips, but changes
how they interact. For example, it allows moving them in unison without
having to select them all. But the distinction between grouping and
linking is quite unclear:

Ah-ha, so I guess I was not crazy, you probably are experiencing the
same problem as me:

Hmm, I don't know of such a problem... it would help a lot if you could
pinpoint the exact steps to reproduce this in a bug report (and any
errors being output in the terminal).
