[Gaim-devel] Gaim2 CVS issues with FreeBSD 5-STABLE

Hi,

There's a couple of issues that should be handled, when using FreeBSD,
before successfully build gaim2 CVS.

This has been tested on FreeBSD 5.4-STABLE.

Including sys/socket.h before including net/if.h solves the problem,
however, some kind  guy in #gaim told me about sys/socket.h is being
already included in internal.h. And, yeah, that's right. Actually, at
line 104.

We ended up showing GNOME in the browser preferences list. Shouldn't we

 From my experience with g_spawn_command_line_sync in /exec plugin, it's 
evil. You're presuming that gconftool-2 will return nicely and in a 
timely manner.

Crazy is probably an understatement.

Why has this stuff gone into core and not just Gtk UI? Anyone who
implements an alternative UI (ncurses, Qt, whatever) is going to have
this forced on them.

It falls back to gaim_global_proxy_get_info() if anything is not set,
but there's no way for a user to configure what this uses.

There is no way to configure a SOCKS4 or SOCKS5 proxy that I can see,
and if the GNOME preferences are set to automatic proxy configuration it
won't work.

It'd be nice if we could have such integration, but I fear the
differences between GNOME's proxy support and Gaim's are too great for
it to be realistic.

Yes, I am. I've been assured by GNOME developers that gconftool-2 will
return immediately and will never print anything other than the value
to STDOUT. Obviouslly, Gaim has stricter requirements for
"immediately" than a shell script would, but if this actually turns
out being problematic, we can change it to use
g_spawn_async_with_pipes(), but that code will be so much uglier.

There's nothing particularly UI-specific to it. It checks
gaim_running_gnome() before depending on it. All the proxy code is in
the core, so adding this to UI would have been kinda hacky---even by
the standards set by this hack.

Actually, that fallback is only if for some reason
g_spawn_command_line_sync() fails. Since I'm doing
g_find_program_in_path() first, I can't think of any good reason this
would fail; I just figured the global proxy was as good a fallback as
any. This could be modified to detect this failure and show global
proxies in the prefs on failure.

I found some SOCKS settings in gconf I can toy around with.

It should certainly be noted that even if this fails miserably, it can
still be overridden at the account level. Which is, while
inconvinient, good enough for a beta in my opinion.

I don't use proxies, so I really don't care. Also, the preferences
have been slashed enough that I think I'm over that for a while
(especially since now only huge table only appears if you have a proxy
set). It's mostly that we have GNOME people whining at us: you have to
use GConf because you're duplicating proxy settings! How dare you!

And, yes, they have a point that this integration would be nice, so
I'm willing to give it a try so that we can either say "hey, we're
using GConf settings on GNOME now" and they'll be happy or say "we
tried using GConf; it didn't work. Here's what you need to change if
you want us to use it."

Besides, it's not like our proxy support is a bastion of goodness, anyway :=

I've been working with the dbus and guifications folks on getting  
some of these neat things working on OS X. I'd be happy to write  
patches for libgaim as I'm fairly familiar with how things work in a  
glib based environment. Is 2.0.0 blocking on the GObjectification  
work that was being done? Or is that being pushed back.

There is a "buddy-away" signal in blist.c, but I have a feeling it is not
emitted when the away messages changes but the state does not.  It should be
made to do so, though.  Actually, maybe those signals should be emitted from
status.c?

Nope, I think 2.0.0 is really only blocking on getting status stuff working
better and squashing the bigger bugs.  Are people still trying to get the
voice/video stuff into 2.0.0?

Personally I'd like to see us release 3.0.0 in mid February with voice/video
and better privacy.  Possibly some GObjectification--I don't know the status
of that.

There were some patches in the tracker for a signal like that, I grabbed 
them and am working on them. I intend to commit them soon.

[Gaim-devel] limiting prpls to 3 emblems (instead of 4)

Would it be reasonable to limit prpls to setting 3 emblems instead of 4? 
The reason I ask, is that I would like to use the sw emblem position for 
an envelope emblem if a buddy has a message pending.

I have the replacement for queuing pretty much finished. As suggested, 
there is a 3-way pref in the conversation preferences ("Hide new IM 
conversations") which can be set to never, away or always. Since this is 
in gaim proper, there needs to be some notification in gaim proper that 
there are messages waiting, since not everyone will be using the docklet 
or some other notification plugin. I've opted for adding an envelope 
emblem in the sw corner of the icon in the buddy list. Double-clicking 
the buddy will open up the hidden conversation.

I've glanced over all the prpls to see how many emblems each are using. 
  Here's what I found:

   silc, zephyr, simple: none
   jabber: se, nw
   toc, oscar: se, sw, nw, ne (patch for oscar bug here in tracker)
   msn, yahoo: se, sw, nw (ne is set, but doesn't seem possible)
   all others: se

So, it appears only toc and oscar could potentially use all 4 emblems. 
Maybe someone who is familiar with the protocols can determine if it is 
actually possible for all four to be used.

If this proposal sounds reasonable, I will go ahead and modify  the 
list_emblems api and implementations to drop the use of sw.

Other suggestions are welcome. I've posted a screenshot of the buddy 
list with a pending message if anyone wants to take a look:

I don't have any problem with limiting prpls to 3 emblems (although I would
still let them set 4, and then bump off one of them if you have queued
messages from a user).

However, a little envelope next to somebodies name doesn't seem very
attention-grabbing.  It seems like it'd be really easy to not notice the
envelope.  Especially if you have a long buddy list that you'd normally have
to scroll through.  Of course, I don't have any better suggestions.

It was pointed out to me on #gaim that the envelope emblem doesn't work 
if you receive a message from someone not on your buddy list, so the 
emblem idea sort of fell flat. It could still be used as an additional 
notification, but isn't sufficient on its own.

I've now opted for sadrul's suggestion, which is a menutray icon as seen 
here:

(yeah, i stupidy overwrote the screenshot from my previous e-mail so

I have a little cleaning up to do (converting old prefs to new 3-way

Maybe, I don't know. What I've genereally been doing for yahoo when a 
buddy disappears from your buddy list is setting them to a special not 
on server list status, and treating it as something akin to not 
authorized. If y'all think its better to just remove them, let me know.

Note that (at least when I implemented this several versions of yahoo 
ago) if a buddy deletes himself from your list when you're offline, he's 
just not on the list the server sends anymore, with no notice sent.

Yes, we do have Windows XP and we did install Gaim 1.5.0.exe.  I have no idea what cygwin is, so I can't answer that question!  We get no error message, just that Sally is disconnected (this, by the way, is her mother).  I just went to check it out again, and I see that Sally removed it from the system.  When I re-downloaded Gaim, I used the directions from the first time I downloaded it.  Had no problem whatsoever the first time, but I had to competely recover my computer after the virus (so much for SBC virus protection!!), so I thought it would work just as well this time.  Should I be doing something different this time?  And yes, I am a novice when it comes to computers.

I really appreciate your taking the time to help us with this problem!!

I am assuming this is windows. which installer did you download?
