As of Not Long Ago, the directories they are in are certainly not
world readable ... therefore the files themselves don't matter.

Okay, I was not aware of this. Maybe gaim should do a chmod when it's started,
so the permission would be set to the new value for people who've been using
gaim for a while? But then this would create issues for people who really want
their logs to be world readable.

The umask is just that -- a mask.  You have to mask something with
it...  In this case, we mask 0700 with your umask, and create the
directories following those permissions.  If your case is that we
should be masking 0777 and creating ... I might be willing to listen,
but I don't think it's a good idea.

I am surprised that icq works.  what is the encoding (code-option you 
translated it as ;-) ) in the modify account dialog for that account?

[Gaim-devel] Gaim using hardcoded paths

Hi Folks.

I've been trying to find a way to create a gaim distro for Solaris that 
doesn't use hardcoded paths. This would allow me to build a tarball or 
pkg that can be installed in any location and uses relative path names 
instead of requiring people to put it in the same place I config'd it 
for. Anyone have any pointers on how to accomplish this? It looks like 
most of the bits are set by libtool but I can't state that with much 
conviction.

This would help a Mac OS X build as well. Windows Gaim already computes
the various paths at rumtime by defining DATADIR, LOCALEDIR, LIBDIR as
functions.

One way I can think of would be:
1) Replace all DATADIR, LOCALEDIR, LIBDIR with gaim_get_data_dir,
	gaim_get_locale_dir, gaim_get_lib_dir
2) Define the above functions in a OS independent way.
3) Add a ./configure --enable-hardcoded-prefix for people who really want it,
	in this case the above functions would just return DATADIR, LOCALEDIR,
	LIBDIR. (optional? Is there a reason for this?)

Would this be a sensible way to do it?
