Ian & others,
Sorry, was looking the other way for a bit... (smack me later).
There are process hanging problems with the j2sdk 1.4.0-03, so I've
fallen back to 1.4.0-02 on my production boxes. Sadly, this is the same
JDK that produced the security policy problems, so I had to turn tomcat4
security off to make things work. I know, ick.
I've also had the same mail / pager hanging problems with 1.4.1-01 on
these systems (Debian Woody 3.0 boxes, up to date on patches).
Go to http://debian.medvantx.com/ and look in stable (aka woody) for the
sun-jdk1.4-installer_1.4.0-02.0_i386.deb. This will help you wrap up
the tarball from Sun into an installable deb and make life (semi-)
happy. You could also just add this apt source and apt-get install
sun-jdk1.4-installer or opennms as needed:
deb http://debian.medvantx.com/stable ./
