I bet that I wouldn't notice the difference between the two hammers, but
you can make better hammers if you wish...
anyway, there are some points where I think you are wrong about the
hammer not being good, and has little to do with the aspect but are good
ideas of Larry:
1- it's better to have this hammer that no hammers at all.
is this statement a stupidity? in part yes, and in part not:
if I'm not wrong, this is our first tool, so now some developer could
take out the job on figuring out how to put this tool into the world,
and let players click on it, pick it up, make a inventory to put it and
try to implement an action with it, in example, using wood with it to
make a chair.
now that we have a hammer that looks like a hammer somebody could make a
a saw, or a sword, a tree or whatever. having those new objects would be
a significant advance, so we could make more things work in the world.
but making a better hammer, provided that the result is better and that
you don't waste your time, would be just having a prettier hammer, that
probably wouldn't even be noticeable.
by the way, the same goes for the models: the animations are not the
best, sometimes they have scary faces, etc; but they are there and we
know that they work, and we're not waiting 1 year for the best character
ever created and realizing after that that we have nothing more that a
good character, because we couldn't implement anything in the meantime
and test if we could create a great game or not.
2- it is good to reuse artwork if possible, I don't mind if our chairs
are the same than in other games provided that they are good enough, and
this should speed up a lot the artwork creation. so the idea of Larry of
reusing it it's also good for me.
so the hammer could be more beauty and efficient in number of polys or
whatever? could be, but yet it's quite good, more than enough for me,
and in my opinion we have other priorities than reworking the tools
already done to make them [possibly] look better. having a world with
lots of things that you can interact and make good use is a requirement
(ar least in this genre) for a great game, graphics not.
I don't know about pacman, but there were a lot of games out there with
good graphics when tetris became famous, and there was some Duke Nukem
(and Doom?) out there when Diablo appeared still with the isometric map,
and yet it's a great game.
so yep, maybe you and me have a fundamentally different idea of what's a
great game, I don't mind if our game looks as good or bad as other
mmorpgs out there, in example Planeshift graphics are good enough for
me, I just want it to be more playable and funny, or at lease doing some
things very differently :)
