That's up to the application generating the trap.
It will decide when a "significant event" has occurred,
and hence when it should send a trap.

Depends on the application generating the trap.

You can use the command-line tool "snmptrap"  to explicitly
send a trap request. See the man page for details.


> How to know if the NMS ... is receiving the traps?

Depends on the NMS system being used.
It may log incoming traps somewhere, or display a list
of them.  Or it may update the display status based on
that notification.
  See the documentation for your NMS system for details.

Anything you want it to.
It's typically a script (or sometimes a binary).
You can code this to perform whatever actions you wish.

Getting Too Long Error

I have written a simple program using Version 1 of SNMP with get request.
But I am getting too long error, when I send synchronous request. Can
anybody tell me in which cases you get Too Long error, and how to overcome
it.

You help will be very useful.

  Sounds like you need to add more varbinds into your example.c to
provide additional information in your trap.  Check some of the other
trap generation code in agent/mibgroup/examples/notification.c .

... ass-u-ming that your platform already implements interface status
throughout the full stack, yes.  And that the interface you're
attempting to generate linkUp/linkDown on isn't the same interface
you're expecting to generate traps.

  In our case we have application-specific interfaces that aren't
propagated into the Linux platform, so "ip link set" is a handy way to
implement link status.  Perhaps it can also be useful for Dan's testing?

Immediate notifications for interfaces ?

It depends on what you mean by "immediate".

The DisMan Event MIB support would allow the agent to
check the status of network interfaces on a regular basis,
and report when anything changes.   See snmpd.conf(5)
for details.
   The polling frequency can be specified as part of the
"monitor" command, but the limiting factor would probably
be the implementation of the IF-MIB itself.

If you're looking for a *real* immediate notification, then
you really have to have some form of hook into the interface
driving code itself.   Patch #1759178 might be of interest
to you here.

The routine 'get_myaddr()' is defined in snmplib/system.c
It's not the easiest code to follow, but it appears to look through the
available interfaces, and return the first IP address that it finds.

There are a couple of entries in the Patches tracker (#1916840 &
#1926542) which might be of interest to you, as they would allow
you to specify the agent address to use.

As I said yesterday, you are using a mib2c template that I don't
recognise, and is not one supplied by the Net-SNMP project.
You've refused to say where this template comes from,
or provide the full code that it generates.   So I have no idea
how this module is meant to work, or what might be going wrong.

I would suggest that you use the scalar template that we do
provide, and which is known to be OK.     Or even better, use
the MIB module that already implements the ipForwarding
and ipDefaultTTL objects.   (ip-mib/ip_scalars)

If you know the exact indexes of the information you need,
then you can use the GET request to retrieve exactly this info.
If you don't, then you should use the GETNEXT request to
walk through the table (or an individual column).

See any SNMP reference book for more details.

Just as a quick additional use case / requirement...

For various scenarios built around, say, RPM; it's very convenient to
have, say, Red Hat's net-snmp package ship with a default
configuration file that #includes everything in a given directory so
you can drop local configuration changes in there (using whatever tool
you've deployed for that sort of task) without having to touch the
RPM-managed file. cf. eg. the way Apache is set up. If I'm going to
deploy a new / additional net-snmp config to a couple of hundred
machines, it's much easier and less error prone to just drop a file in
a given directory than to use various methods to modify a monolithic
file or generate one based on whatever source files.

The key point being that having "#include /specific/file.conf" helps,
but we'd also want "#include /some/dir/*.conf" (well, probably include
all in the dir, without giving a shell glob in the config file).
