You can not set a service to 'DOWN' state. In nagios-speak, only hosts  
can be "UP" or "DOWN". The corresponding service terminology is 'OK'  
and 'CRITICAL'.

What are you trying to accomplish?

Your command line syntax differs from your configured command_line .  The command_line in your command definition has a '-H' while your test line does not

Hello,
I have a question that i'm assuming has a quick answer.  I've defined a command as:

define command{
    command_name    check-site
    command_line    $USER1$/check_ping -H $ARG1 -w 3000.0,80% -c 5000.0,100% -p 5 -t 10
    }

which i use to just ping different sites via my services.cfg.  So in my services.cfg i have entries that look like:

define service{
    use                        generic-service
    display_name            check_helpdesk
    host_name                rails_playground
    service_description        check helpdesk
    check_command            check-site!helpdesk_url.com<http://helpdesk_url.com>
    contacts                nagiosadmin
}

Now everything checks out, however when i open up my service page within nagios, i see all my check-sites have unknown statuses stating:
<wrta> was not set

Looking at the check_ping plugin it states that <wrta> is set with the -w option, and looking at my check-site command above, you can see that i hard code <wrta>, so i don't understand why it is not working.  Trying that command above on the command line as such:

./check_ping helpdesk_url.com<http://helpdesk_url.com> -w 3000.0,80% -c 5000.0,100% -p 5 -t 10
PING OK - Packet loss = 0%, RTA = 54.82 ms|rta=54.820000ms;3000.000000;5000.000000;0.000000 pl=0%;80;100;0

So the syntax should work, i just can't figure out what part i have wrong that's causing nagios to freak out.  Any help would be great?

hmmm... It looks like there's something wrong with the PHP parsing of  
share/side.php. Did you rename share/side.php to share/side.html  
perhaps? Is PHP enabled in your web server?

Does share/includes/utils.inc.php exist and is readable by your web  
server?

Does share/config.inc.php exist and is readable by your web server? Do  
the $cfg['xxxx'] variables within it point to proper locations (i.e.  
cgi_config_file points to '/usr/local/nagios/etc/cgi.cfg, etc)?

BTW, i'm running Nagios 3.2.0 compiled in a debian 5.0.2, with apache 
2.2.9 and php 5.2.6

PHP is enabled, but apache is not identifying index.php as a directory 
index file. I have to enter http://myhost/nagios/index.php in order to 
access nagios. If i enter just http://myhost/nagios it will try to 
download a .phtml file. I'm not a apache2 expert, but looks like is 
configured properly, with the tags to proper identify index.php files as 
a directory index and to parse .phtml files using the php module.

I think your PHP parsing is broken entirely. I don't know what OS  
you're using, and you may get better direction from them, but verify  
that the php5 module is loaded by apache. As root, run --

/usr/sbin/httpd -M 2>&1  | grep php

You should see --

  php5_module (shared)

If you do not, PHP is not enabled. Make sure that /etc/httpd/conf.d/ 
php.conf exists and points to your PHP module. My RHEL/CENTOS5 one  
looks like --

also, there is no /usr/sbin/httpd. there is /usr/sbin/apache2 instead.
the command

give me no output. but if the module was not loaded, would i be able to 
view http://host/nagios/index.php?

No AddHandler? Apache won't know that the php module is supposed to  
process .php files without it. The AddType's just set MIME-type for  
the files if they're downloaded by a client, not whether they're  
interpreted or not.

about that at all when started? A very simple test is to create a file  
in the share directory named 'phpinfo.php' with the contents --

phpinfo();
?>

Load it in your browser (http://your.nagios.host/nagios/phpinfo.php).  
If php is working you'll get lots of output about your php install.

The commando "/usr/sbin/apache -M" gives me the following output:

    apache2: bad user name ${APACHE_RUN_USER}

This variable, reffered in apache2.conf is correctly defined in the 
envvar file. The fact that apache is not parsing the php code is driving 
me crazy. Below the message of "can't locate the file" it gives me the 
apache version, OS version and that stuff. It says: "Apache/2.2.9 
(Debian) PHP/5.2.6-1+lenny3 with Suhosin-Patch Server at /x.x.x.x/ Port 
20000"

Yeah, i changed. And putting the php code you told me in a file 
(asd.php) inside the nagios/share folder did not worked =S
The browser just shows an empty page.

Just added

    AddHandler php5-script .php

in my php5.conf (a file included by my apache2.conf) and worked right away!
I don't know why was working before that =S

Nagios isn't the best/right/ideal tool for this really, you would want 
log based alerting which is entirely different and more real time as well.

You can try this dhcp leases plugin that I wrote which will display all 
current leases and macs in the nagios interface if you want:

You could make Nagios do what you asked via a nagios check of the 
logfile for a string indicating a lease grant or something similar but I

Technically you could kind of use my plugin mentioned about to do what 
you want by simply specifying a whitelist host (doesn't have to exist) 
so that Nagios raises critical on any host that gets a lease. You 
wouldn't be notified of new leases being handed out for the remainder of 
the notification interval though. I consider this a bit of a hack to be 
honest.

Back to my first recommendation, real time log based alerting, that's 
what I do for stuff like this and it is _good_.

You can certainly do that, but you'll probably have to write your own 
plugin to do it. It's not something that would work generically; you 
will need to somehow tap into the specific DHCP server you are using. So 
the plugin will have to be tailored for the Windows DHCP server, or one 
of the ones for the Linux.

There are quite a few ways to do this:

If your DHCP server also updates a DNS server, it may be easier to 
instead enumerate all IP addresses in DNS (use host -l <domainname>), 
and compare that with a previous version of the same file. That is of 
course not completely reliable.

Or if you are using the Linux ISC DHCP server, your plugin could go 
through /var/lib/dhcp/db/dhcpd.leases and alert you to any leases newer 
than, say, 5 minutes. Keep in mind that this will alert you of renewals 
as well.
