[Mjpeg-users] Matrox rainbow runner studio

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this list, so forgive me if this topic has been beat to death
before.  I didn't find it by searching the archives. 

I have an older Matrox rainbow runner studio card. NOT a G series card.
It's the Mystique 220 with the rainbow runner studio add on card. The
"studio" card uses a ZR36060 chip along with the SAA7111A video decoder
but it has a SAA7125HZ digital video encoder. Can the driver zoran and
mjpeg tools be made to work with this card?  If not and it's too much
work to try to make it work, what is the "best" video capture
alternative?  I've read good and bad things about various cards. So, any
and all suggestions are appreciated.

No; the zoran driver heavily depends on the zr36067 PCI controller; the
matrox cards (afaik) don't use this.

	Ok - that answers the first part of the question and now I'll chime
	in with the second part ("if not ... what card should I get") :-)

	My recommendation, if you're not looking to spend a ton of money,
	would be a $20 IEEE1394 card (if your motherboard doesn't already
	have integrated Firewire) and an analog<->DV converter box such
	as the Canopus ADVC-110.  http://www.canopus.com and look around.

	If you're looking to spend $$$ then let me know - I've no shortage
	of ideas there either <grin>

Could've known. Still, if you're looking for something pure, cool,
old-fashioned and flashy, so something that'll impress girls [*] as
opposed to just work, get a DC10+. They're still state-of-the-art cards
in their own segment.

	Hmmm, when are you supposed to have time to impress girls if you're
	spending all the time trying to get the DC10+ working :-)   Or have the
	picky/troublesome motherboard chipset issues disappeared over time?

	They do have one advantage over DV - mjpeg{a,b} is 4:2:2 rather than
	4:1:1 so if one is careful (and uses the proper settings in the
	tool pipeline) the color could be better with a mjpeg card.

	For state of the art in capture devices take a look at the 
	AJA product line:  http://www.aja.com (OS/X only but I export the
	data off to mjpegtools for processing).

You're thinking of the Buz, not DC10+.

[Mjpeg-users] Making animations with JPEG2YUV...frame dropping

Hi, I'm trying to stop motion animate a bunch of JPGs I have, following 
the instructions on this page:

I am using the command:

jpeg2yuv -f 4 -b49 -n 161 -I p -j photo%04d.JPG | yuv2lav -o 
stream_without_sound.avi

Mplayer doesn't like the output *at all* (codecs?). Vlc plays it, but 
drops frames part way in (claiming "computer too slow" -- don't think 
so! AMD64 3200 1GB RAM; also I can play 640x480 at 32fps from my digital 
camera without any problem). The images were originally 1024x768, but I 
dropped their resolution to 640x480.

Is there another way I can do this? Or what should I do to prevent the 
framedropping from happening?

A framerate of 4FPS ist very uncommon. Have you tried using a more
common framerate like 24/25FPS, and looked what happens than ?

Is lavplay/glav able to play back the stream ?

[Mjpeg-users] mjpegtools 1.6.3 RC3 available

Hi guys,

same place as usual (http://sf.net/projects/mjpeg/), there's the next
release candidate for what will eventually be 1.8.0 (1.6.3-rc3). This
one includes some important fixes to the denoiser, and of course a lot
of general maintainance work all around.

Bugs should go to this list, and you know the go: no bugs = release. So
if you want a release, be quiet, but if you don't want a buggy release,
speak up now or be silent forever until death do us apart (oh, wait,
that's something else, well, nevermind).

What is the excat error message ? (add -v 2 to mpeg2enc and jpeg2yuv)

I would guess that mpeg2enc does not want to encode a stream at 10FPS
because that is no legal Framerate. Also the resulution does not fit to
any norm well, and the pixle aspect ration. You might have to add a
scaler to correct that. 

Your command should look more like that:
jpeg2yuv -f 24 -I p -n 32 -L 0 -b 1 -j images_test2/evt%05d.jpeg |
mpeg2enc -f 3 -a 1 -b 4000 -o video2.mp2

Hi all,

I have just one small question:

Today I google'd for information about and a driver for the
Pinnacle/Miro DC20. I found an obviously old page by Wolfgang Scherr,
which says, that a driver for the DC20 is planned ....
And I found some very old mails on the mjpeg-user/dev mailing lists.

So my question is: Does anybody know anything about any driver
development related to the Pinnacle/Miro DC20 ?

If you want some information about the zoran driver start here:
http://mjpeg.sourceforge.net/driver-zoran/index.php

There were plans for extending the zoran driver for the DC20. But I have
never heard that there is a working driver.

If you want to start with development, you should check out the zoran
driver from the mjpeg cvs.

In some over-curious testing, I think I ran into an upper limit (be it 
unusable for any practical purpose) for -b. Any encoding with -b greater 
than 15000 just doesn't work. Does anyone have any similar experiences? 
Does anyone know the upper limit of -b for 1.6.2?

Also, is there an irc channel for mjpegtools?

Normaly you don't use bitrates over 10000Kbit/sec. 
And 16000 is the maximal allowed bitrate. And mpeg2enc should tell you
that with a message like that:
**ERROR: [mpeg2enc] Bit rate is greater than permitted in specified
Level

-f 1/4/8 have lower limits.

	frame sizes and higher bitrates belong to the higher levels - MP@...
	as I recall (reference books are at home).

	1.6.2 had a bug that effectively made it impossible to do what you're
	trying to do (--no-constraints didn't really do anything).  If you're 
	running the cvs version (or the 1.6.3-RC2 release candidate - soon to 
	be replaced by RC3) then you can *force* mpeg2enc to do something 
	it's not designed for (and as the comments say "may expose bugs" ;)) 
	with "--no-constraints".  NOTE also that you'll need to increase the 
	VBV with "-V" - a value of 488 is sufficient up thru HD rates, so 
	"-V 488" (and you'll need to give the same value to mplex later 
	on with '-b').

Nope, just curious! I have a NTSC DV camera, and I'll be encoding for 
DVD, but I'm profiling the relationship between -b and -q for output 
sizes. Saw some cool curves and wanted to see what happened beyond 9800. 
http://viswiz.gmd.de/DVP/Public/deliv/deliv.211/mpeg/pr@...> gave me 
a clue about what you were talking about (for those others here who 
aren't quite up to scratch with the lingo).

According to the link I've included, 15000 is the max bitrate for MP@... 
encoders; but, maybe it's different in the source.

	If you're running something newer than 1.6.2 you can, as I mentioned,
	use the "--no-constraints" and -V options to cajole mjpeg2enc to
	encoding at higher rates.  Prior to the RC2 or cvs versions there
	was a bug that effectively no-op'd the no-constraints option.

	I have, as an experiment, encoded 1920x1080 (well, actually it should
	be 1920x1088 with the vertical display size set to 1080 - but mpeg2enc
	doesn't support setting that option in the headers).

I do not understand the final warnings. When I run this command there
is no sync-offset at all.

Alternatively, if I use mpgtx to add 6 seconds of silence to the mp2 file..=
