Don't use the draft option in your document (or use option final with
graphicx).

Paul,Actually the file is displayed properly in gsview. It wont display
after compiled in LEd ...It wont display anywhere called in the whole
document.....I created the original file using Visio then some other
utilities to get it to .eps. I will just redraw the file using LaTexDraw and
see what happens....

All,
I resolved the issue this way. I upgraded to 2.7 and .eps files that I
created using LatexDraw are now being displayed in the DVI viewer. However,
some .eps files are not. I know its the "method" of how I created those
other files. Thanks for all input.

Dear Robert,

some of the Windows programs include a preview picture (raster graphics)
and put it BEFORE the Postscript header into the file. Yap then does not
find the bounding box and gives up. Some programs put it after the
Postscript EOF mark which also seems to confuse the dvi viewer. Deleting
these previews or preventing the programs to add them in the first place
has helped me quite a bit.

I am not sure to understand this problem. Could you please provide a
minimal document explaining what you want to achieve.

Anyway, anything that can be obtained from a \ref command can be
converted to roman uppercase numerals, using the refcount package, as
in:

\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{refcount}
\newcounter{a}
\begin{document}
\section{A}\label{sec:1}\setcounterref{a}{sec:1}
See section \Roman{a}.
\end{document}

This is *not* a MiKTeX problem. It is a LaTeX problem.

Using the refcount package I was able to convert the chapter numbers to 
Roman numerals as suggested. However, the problem is that I do not want 
the chapter numbers to be shown as Roman numerals but I want to define a 
Roman numeral that refers to a certain section (which has a different 
chapter number).

\documentclass{article}
\chapter{Introduction}
\chapter{Methods}
\chapter{Results}
\section{First article} %this section should be referred to as I
\section{Second article} %this section should be referred to as II
\section{Third article} %this section should be referred to as III
\section{Fourth article} %this section should be referred to as IV
\end{document}

If I use the refcount package, I get a Roman numeral of III for all the 
articles.

There is no \chapter command in the article class.

Please make a real, complete, running, small example that demonstrates your
problem as for a solution one has to know the format of the section
numbers.

Hi,

ok, I am making a book and I thought that the chapter command is also in 
the article class. Anyway, here is my problem

\documentclass[a4paper,12pt]{book}
\usepackage{refcount}
\newcounter{first}
\begin{document}
\chapter{Intro}
\chapter{Results}
\section{first article (I)}
\label{sec:first}
\setcounterref{first}{sec:first}
\section{second article (II)}
\section{third article (III)}
Here I want to refer to the first article \ref{sec:first} as a Roman 
numeral I instead of \Roman{first}.
\end{document}

There is also a ".1" under section 2.1. How can I get rid of that?

Ok, no more topposting!

Thank you very much for the solution! Now I get the section number 
before the section title to be displayed in Romans as well. I still have 
to read and understand how this was done, but it does solve my problem.

Hi again, sorry to bother you again but I was too hasty in celebrating 
the solution. Now I get all the sections under all chapters labeled as 
Roman numerals. My original idea was to have only the sections 
describing the articles under the chapter Results to be numbered as 
Romans, and other sections under other chapters should have arabic 
chapter and section numbers.

Any advice on this?

This is far from perfect. I hope that someone else will provide a better

I do not mean to be picky, but now the \ref{sec:first} produces an 
arabic numeral 2. I also removed the parentheses and put the Roman 
numeral before the title.

That's because you are using \stepcounter instead of \refstepcounter.
Only the second gives a value which is stored by \label.

But you shouldn't use this article command. It will allow page breaks
after the title, don't put its title in the table of contents and give
different spacings than the other section commands. Better do as
suggested in c.t.t and change \thesection locally.

Hi Joe,
I have run into that exact trouble once!

I described my problem on this list some ~18 months ago, IIRC, and never
ever really nailed it down; however, it was a problem regarding my work
setup where I'm not normally enjoying admin rights. I'm at home now, but I
believe I solved it by using long path names (I utilize shortcuts/tools in
my UltraEdit editor for this otherwise tedious step) when specifying working
directories and so forth.

Try to play with these ideas yourself, I'll see if I can recollect my
problem and solution back at work tomorrow.

What does "the file"  mean?  Did you get the same error?

You haven't answered the questions you were asked.  It is difficult to
provide advice for a situatation few people have encountered, so if you
want an answer need to  provide much more information.   The error
message doesn't say what file triggered the error.   Can you do
"dir /x" in each directory, starting with C:\?
