I decided to start from first principles. Created the following minimal
Here is some random test. It should compile, and generate DVI file.
Worked fine - DVI file created. OK, so in my earlier attempts, using
some of my existing documents, something I was loading wasn't playing
nice with MikTeX. pain, since I work with about 25 different packages,
and numerous little scripts/defines etc. in the preamble, but so be it.
Found the culprit. MikTeX does not generate a DVI file *if* you have a
bit of code trying to figure out how you're compiling - in my case
% Check if we are compiling under latex or pdflatex - use appropriate
% graphics package
In thinking about it, and given what the code is trying to do, this
makes sense (worked fine in 2.4, but given that 2.5 is not eTex anymore,
I can see why this *might* cause problems for pdfetex). So, for the
moment, I'm able to generate a DVI file.
Now, to figure out why new yap doesn't like embedded eps files? ;-)
