Ermm... The current state is that they're more or less unused. They
are exposed to userspace through sysfs, but they aren't used for MM
code. They were intended to represent the system's memory, to allow for
nodes without memory, nodes without CPUs, etc. I wanted to separate the
node from it's individual components (mem, CPUs, pci busses/devices,
etc). Lumping everything as a node has caused some small problems, but
they've been worked around. I still like the idea, but it appears no
one else cares... :(

That is there for multi-path I/O. There are patches floating around
