Thanks. It's based on 2.6.27.2 and as such does not yet contain a few
recent driver updates of later 2.6.27.y releases:

The 2.6.27.5 patch "...delay first login..." is of some interest to your
trouble. You can apply it by
$ cd whatever/linux-source-2.6.27
$ patch -p1 < \
something/774-firewire-fw-sbp2-delay-first-login-to-avoid-retries.patch
Then rebuild the kernel, or just the modules. (Can't give you details
for the latter because I'm not used to build kernels from source packages.)
