LimeSurvey - the Online Survey Tool

Hi Tom,

I have reviewed your requirements. There are some challenges like not 
showing the current user's name at the list of answers within a 
question. With the current Limesurvey version this is nearly impossible. 
Better filter this data afterwards.

Another problem will be the compatibility between Limesurvey 1.x and the 
new Limesurvey 2. LS2 is completely rewritten from scratch and uses 
CakePHP framework and a different database layout. Therefore only some 
very few parts of the code will be reusable.

Since export formats are not my field of expertise I'll forward your 
email to our devloper mailing list, asking developers interested in 
creating a solution for you to contact you directly. Of course 
everything will be kept confidential.

@Limesurvey-devs, please put me on CC if you contact Tom so I know that 
someone takes care of this.

welcome to the team!

Without PHP knowledge it will be hard to follow the current code, which 
partly is a mess, this is the reason why we are working on Limesurvey 2, 
a complete rewrite. Limesurvey 2 uses much more Javascript so you might 
be of much help. Please contact project leader Carsten Schmitz 
(carsten.schmitz.hh@...) so he can point you to tasks we need help 
with.

I suggest to set up Limesurvey 1.85+, which you have probably done 
already, and also Limesurvey 2 alpha to take a look at the new version.
Since you mentioned you are interested in UI and design, take a look at 
the logs of our Limesurvey 2 UI meeting which takes place every 
Saturday:

I compiled a new documentation about conditions in v1.85.

I share your concern about pChart and it's likely future. My personal preference would be to look at the library with the most developers and the most users. If we want to future-proof ourselves, the best way is to make the elements of the script that deal with the chart library something that can be easily removed from the rest of the code. Hi all,
inside LimeSurvey2, the Statistics and Dashboard GSOC projects are combining
forces to produce the Survey Dashboard. For those who are interested in
contributing ideas for the Dashboard, please review the Widgets Design
Document <http://www.docs.limesurvey.org/Widgets+Design+Document> - a base
for discussion and sort-of a widgets wish-list. The page contains a
preliminary list of widgets with specifications and notes - feel free to
extend and modify it. I haven't looked through the wiki properly yet, but if
a similar list already exists, please post the link too.

The Survey Dashboard will also be the main discussion topic for this week's
UI Meeting (25th July, 1pm UTC).

I think, the response rate is essential and should not be ignored by anyone (Everyone who has 10-20% response rate should be more than happy anyway). But the response rate is important to understand and interpret the results as well, because you have to keep in mind what percentage of invited person have actually participated. It is a vital part of the survey statistics. Just because some "hobby" researcher is disappointed that the response rate was not 99,9% we should ban such an important figure from the dashboard. > 2. Funnily enough, what that I meant there was how many people started the survey and actually completed it (in the diagram, it was 1/11 hence 9%), not how many of the invited people did the survey. Drop-out rate is important and is a signal to the surveyor of how likely the participant is to finish the survey. Knowing about how many people dropped out is really important for expert (agree, Holger?). I think Holger once showed us a screenshot where you could see how many people got to a certain question before they left. Choose how you want the question to be displayed by default when you create it. Allow for it to be changed on a question-by-question basis for a particular report. When you choose what fields you want to appear it shouldn't be too hard to add a dropdown to each question with how it will appear and default it to the setting in the question definition. Hi!

 Just for your information (and hopefully joy), due to success of
LimeSurvey at the public universities in Costa Rica (all of them uses
it), and other institutions related to them too, we have been accepted
to demonstrate the marvellous tool that is at the II Central-american
Congress of Computation for Development. It is not a very very
important event, but anyway, it is another opportunity to share the
virtues of LimeSurvey, just that is good, isn't it? :-).

 By the way, happily I will be in the presentation only helping to my
dear friend Patricia, who is nowadays a super powerful user of
limesurvey, and has the skills enough to develop too.

I'm from the University of Zurich and would like to sponsor an extension 
we need to LimeSurvey.
Basically it is the ability to limit presentation time of a picture 
(automatic forward to the next page after some seconds (done most likley 
in JavaScript)) and the same timeable ability for a text input box (here 
we would need a warning timer (after a certain amount of time a warning 
comes up, that you only have that much time left).
I'm working on a PDF describing the process in detail.
What I'm looking for is a developer who would like to implement this (I 
think it would take less than a week) in the timeframe till mid august. 
Of course we will pay the development of this extension and it shall be 
opensource!

So how much time (and $$$) would this cost and who can implement this?

I will send the PDF to the developers who are interested.

Hello all,
I've noticed how the Dashboard was an unbearable performance hog, and so
decided to do recode it. It is now up to par on speed with the original
static 'Admin' dashboard, whilst maintaining customizability and
flexibility. I've also completed the GUI switch from dark to a brighter
theme, to match the current LS2 look-and-feel. Also, code cleanup and event
delegation in JavaScript routines should boost overall Dashboard front-end
performance.

Next, I'll be working on making dashboards and widgets embed well into other
websites; integrating widgets with Daniel's Statistics and Results API; and
research ways to further improve the Dashboard back-end efficiency.

I have been creating mock-up fixtures for LS2 results and question types
these days. After that , i encountered some problems regarding the design of
the question structure , particularly in Model Answers model.

As far as i know, a question is composed of question text and a set of
possible answers ( predefined or not predefined ). In the current design ,
model_answer acts as a central hub to store the answer. That meant we mixed
the labels ( as in LS1 called ) and answers together

For example :

Apple ( this is a label ) ------- __________  ( this is an an answer )

This is fine with the simple question structure , however, when the question
structure get really complex with the some question types having multiple
labels' type ( like multi flexi  , we are actually mixing the labels and
answer together, treating them all the same. The only thing that separates
labels and answers is category. Since we can have as many categories as we
want, it's possible to assign all predefined answers to a category and use
it.

So:
Apple: -- category: label
Answer: -- category: answer


The second way to approach it is to use different models for possible
answers and labels ( like LS1 which have labels and possible values ).

Please give your thoughts on this.

I do not think that general authentication plugin was 3rd party. Only
for the OpenId and CAS maybe.

What was used for authentication were the authentication_plugins under
/app/controllers/components.
I worked on the ldap_authentication plugin.

Did you change any of those files? And if yes which ones?

Also I gave another try on the installation.
Now it progresses till the installation is complete but after that
clicking newSurvey or theDashboard button produces a 404 error.
Do you know if that was completed and if it suppose to work after the
user clicks any of those buttons? That is basically step6.

just an idea to the "change default template" problem:

Why not implementing a button in the template manager which copies the default template to default(custom) dir and the user is ready to change the default template within seconds, without copying manually or overwriting the default template.

Could be useful for the non-technical template changers...

Maybe this could even be implemented for all templates, so you can always get a custom copy of your favorite template and switch back to the original in notime...
