That is currently a major feature lacking in the library.
You can write out the active elements of a refined mesh, but
when you read it back in those elements are treated as level
0 and cannot be further coarsened. We have been having some
discussion about this recently, but nothing is coded yet, sorry.
The xda format may be extended to read/write adapted meshes,
hopefully in such a way that it is still back-compatible with
