K-Meleon

Sven,

I don't think that will work in K-Meleon. I remember trying something
similar in the past and it didn't work. I think Jeff said that it had
something to do with how Preferences and privileges were enabled in the
embedding browser. It might be something worth posting in the
embedding.mozilla newsgroup to see if that is something that embedded
Mozilla supports.

That's unfortunate because it was K-M I was trying to develop littler helper
(script)application for, not really Mozilla :(

Erm... I know only little about programming (besides web-related) and I
proabably can't formulate my question about embedded Mozilla in such a way
that developers wouldn't burst out laughing :). And I couldn't answer any
specific questions too about embedding K-M or something.

So I'd rather have confirmation from K-M developers themselves in this
matter. I assume K-M doesn't support signed scripts either then?

I dont think any of us are really interested in a closed source browser 
based on IE.  K-Meleon is based on the open source mozilla engine, and is 
fully open source itself.  Its also fully standards compliant.

This browser looks like it uses the IE API interface for page rendering 
and such, which means it probably suffers from the same flaws IE supports 
too.

Hmm...Crazy Browser looks like it runs on top of Internet Explorer. I've seen
other browsers like this: Public Web Browser (PWB) is one example. PWB is much
more customizable than Crazy Browser though.  If you don't want IE, it doesn't
look like you can run Crazy Browser.

I found that if you compile 0.6.5 and run it without the "bmpmenu.dll"
plugin, the menu problem, where the menus are too narrow, doesn't occur.

This is good news. This bug:

which required that we include appcomps.dll for FTP support has been
fixed.  Now, when using MFCEmbed to browse FTP sites, it will properly
display the directory structure.

        Sorry for not providing complete info.  I believe this is the most recent version, v. 0.6 build 547 10/26/01.  I tried several different proxies, including this one which I verified was working in Netscape:

145.253.180.45:80 

        I noticed this initially with a proxy that is not working in Netscape [down/offline or whatever], but with that proxy pages were loading in K-Meleon.  I then ran the IP check and found the proxy seemed to be simply by-passed.  I tested with the above proxy, after verifying it was working in Netscape, to make sure this was not simply by-passing the proxy that was not working.  Using 145.253.180.45:80, the IP test still gave me my actual computer IP, rather than the proxy.  From that I surmised the proxy seems to not be getting seen.  

        Apart from nuances such as these, I remain very impressed with the performance!

        Thanks very much.  Unfortunately that did not do the trick.  FWIW, I do not have it installed in the 'program files' directory, if that would make any difference.  I also normally do not run with js enabled, but did go through these steps with it enabled.  No difference.

I've been testing the beta on saving configuration changes.

Prefs.js still doesn't seem to be recongnizing changes. The rest of the
configuration files seem to be registering and saving changes properly.

Menu glitches:

Under File menu:

Entry lists "Print Setup" but the dialog box is labeled as "Page Setup".

No keyboard shortcuts for Print Preview and Print Setup. Mozilla uses
CTRL-U and CTRL-V.

Under View menu:

Entry for "Status Bar" under "View" - "Toolbars" doesn't line up with the
other listed toolbars. It's aligned to the right slightly.


Bookmarks and Favorites:

Did we want to use the Netscape and IE terms:

"Manage Bookmarks" and "Organize Favorites" instead of "Edit"?

[Edit is intuitive to me but I wonder if converts might be looking for the
old terms?]


Help:

I'll make another plug for adding "About Plugins" on this menu.

We used to be able to right-click on menus and select and unselect
toolbars. I found this to be a helpful feature to quickly free up screen
space. Could this be added back in??

I  hestitate to talk about what I don't really know but that hasn't stopped me
before so here goes!

Apparently, our Search button is having problems handling spaces and
international characters. The results of a search passed to Google is not what
Google produces when searching directly in Google.

Digging around the code, I think I stumbled on at least one point where
K-Meleon is parsing URLs and where the conversion process might be causing the
difference:

In "Plugins.cpp", there's this little bit of code:

Now, I'm not sure if this is relevant but it seems that the code is converting
the URLs from ASCII to UCS2.  I have to admit I'm understanding about 5% of
that. But is this something that could be happening with the Google search? Is
the translation of the URL that is passed to Google goofing things up?

code and the source files from CVS.

In case no one has mentioned/noticed the following, I just thought I'd
mention it:

When viewing bookmarks (in the .6 beta build 547) if there's a folder at
the same "level" as the toolbar, and I try to move to the "expanded"
part of the folder, the bookmarks disappear and the "Help" menu drop
down appears (because the mouse is now over where the help drop-down
is).

Hope you can follow that convoluted sentence...  I've been lurking for a
little bit, and feel a little bad mentioning it since I don't have time
to help with the development, but there it is... :-)

Really like the product - use it whenever possible...  Is there a place
to send urls of pages that don't work?  Or is info like that not really
of interest?
