I don't think I'm the first to bring this up, but from searching the mailing
list archive I can't see if anyone has suggested we revert to old behaviour,
so let me be the first.
The changing in docking in 4.2preN seems to me to be at best questionable
from a GUI point of view, mostly because even though I was looking for it,
it took me a minute to find the docking triangle cleverly hidden in the
floating window (it wasn't helped by the fact that I started with a file
browser window). For a test, I grabbed a few people who sit near me who use
jEdit anywhere from occasionally to all day long and asked them to dock
Hypersearch in 4.2pre4 on my machine.
The results: 0 for 4 - none of them could (and all of them went into global
and buffer options). Granted, they didn't read the release notes, but a GUI
really should be obvious (this reminds me a bit of the issue with the
non-standard pencil icon for saves, etc.), and these people aren't dummies
(not by a long stretch). They shouldn't have to read release notes or
instructions.
I also noted that, as far as I can tell, there is no docking triangle on the
file browser - I'm guessing that's just temporary?
Anyway, my suggestion is, leave the new docking button in, but perhaps try
to make it a bit more obvious (an upside down triangle doesn't scream
docking), and in the mean time, restore the Global Options->Docking entry.
It may well be redundant, but it's often nice to have more than one way to
do something.
Just my 1.45 cents (I'm Canadian, we lose some in the exchange)...
