You did it all wrong and much too complicated. Since I don't know Red
Hat that well I have to describe two possible solutions:

a) Configure Red Hat to start into runlevel 5 using the configuration
tool (probably linuxconf). Don't touch any system files like
/etc/inittab! If that's not possible because Red Hat cannot be
configured to boot into a graphical login then

b) use another distro. I suggest Mandrake or SuSE _if_ you want to be
able to configure this with a setup/configuration tool, or Slackware or
Debian if you'd like to do it manually, editing /etc/inittab.

It's as easy as that. Just remember not to touch system config files on
Linux boxes which feature a 'clever' configuration tool... unless you
know what you do, of course.

AFAIK this cannot work. Xclients looks ok, but I don't understand your
/etc/X11/gdm/Sessions/IceWm - just where would /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession
know what to do with the argument "IceWm"?

Anyway, I suggest copying ~/Xclients to ~/.xsession and choose 'Default'
(read the IceWM FAQ at
http://icewm.maol.ch/FAQ/uk/IceWM-FAQ-3.html#ss3.3, the note for
Mandrake users maybe applies to RH users too.)

on a normal workstation setup imlib is always included. You just have to
install imlib-devel (or however your distro calls it) too.

Exactly. Looks as if you don't have support for jpeg images. If you
compile --with-imlib you get support for all image formats supported by
imlib, which is lots, including png, gif, jpg, xpm, ...

The default compile for IceWM doesn't support anything but .xpm's on the
background. Do a ./configure --help and look for other options. Personally,=
 I
use xloadimage to put .jpgs and .gifs as my wallpaper during X startup.=20

Alan, it sounds like you're missing either imlib or libjpeg to me.  Can you
send the list the output of "ldd $(which icewm)" to confirm, please?

OK, I figured it out.  Doing a right-click on an *exact* edge pixel of
the tasbar and then dragging moves the window.  A little odd, but now I
know.  Didn't see ny docs for this anywhere...

Even so, is there a way to disable this?

AFAIK there is no _direct_ way to to this as there is no X clients 
'mapping order' available for trivia.
IAE, there are methods to do your job, but there is no universal solution.
some initiating hints would be the XFree86 window manipulation tools 
(xlsclients, xprop, xwininfo etc), THE 'icesh' :) 
+ a practical hint:
	xterm & sleep 1 ; icesh -window focus setLayer 0
( increase the sleep time if you have a heavy loaded system to obtain 
  the righteous effect ;-]~ )

gnome-config is a little executable which prints out the paths to the
actual config. You might look for it on your box using 'locate' or
'find'. If you've found it you should add the path like this:
--with-gnome-menus=/path/...

Sounds like you're using a CD from a vendor who is shipping a cut-down 
version to make a single-CD release. Even the FTPable ISOs make a 2xCD 
release.  I wouldn't put the blame on RH for this...

Actually, you're all dealing with a bonehead.  I forgot about the 
second CD in my desk.  It looks like the first CD has the RPMs needed 
for the vast majority of installs.  CD #2 has a more extensive 
collection, and all of the libs that I need.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.  I apologize for any 
consternation that I may have caused.

I am now writing this message from IceWM running on a Dell Dimension XPS
466V (486DX2-66, 64MB RAM, 2MB ATI VL Mach64).  It's quicker than
Sawfish (RH 7.2's default) and much quicker than I expected.

Thanks for all of the configuration help.  Once I had the correct
libraries installed, compiling it from scratch was a snap.  Keep up the
great work!

You don't have the X development files (header files) installed. I don't
know what package they're in for your distribution, but it's name should
be rather self explanatory.

Alternatively you have them installed somewhere where IceWM can't find
them. This might be if you have installed X manually, but virtually
_all_ distributions and Unices place their X header files in a place
known to IceWM.

I did recompile it to that version though, I did a './configure 
--with-imlib2=" /usr/X11R6/bin/"', so it should have been looking for 
the imlib2 instead of the imlib which I thought it did because it didn't 
give me any errors during compilations or installation
