Thanks so much.
'play' turns out to have a '-q' option, although
such an option is not mentioned in the 'play' help
file (play --help). maybe the '-q' gets passed to
sox? (I did not look carefully at the 'play'
script.)
Anyway, including '-q' in the play command certainly
prevents the text output, so my annoyance at seeing
all those irrelevant words appear on my screen has
been transformed to delight, since they've vanished.
