gnubiff

The problems you describe should be present in all versions of gnubiff.

Currently gnubiff resets its internal buffer with read messages if
there is a connection error. As the gmail pop3 server gives connection
errors quite freuqently this probably leads to the behavior you notice.
We will provide an option in the near future to disable this resetting
when connection errors occur.

This is a feature of gmail not gnubiff. There is no way to change this
in gnubiff when using the gmail pop3 server. It may help to use one of
the local pop3 proxies that parse gmail's web interface (freepops or
libgmail) and access these via gnubiff.

Certainly. As the problems via the pop3 interface are not on our side,
gmail doesn't want to support the IMAP4 protocol (which would be the
correct protocol for a server based mailbox service) a much improved
gmail support will not be available in the near future. This may happen
later but to do so in a proper and reliable way is not so easy.

This has been suggested before (it's feature request #1092202 on source
forge). Unfortunately the situation hasn't changed yet. A quote from the
gnome-keyring README:

The library libgnome-keyring is used by applications to integrate with
the gnome keyring system. However, at this point the library hasn't
been tested and used enought to consider the API to be publically
exposed. Therefore use of libgnome-keyring is at the moment limited to
internal use in the gnome desktop. However, we hope that the
gnome-keyring API will turn out useful and good, so that later it can
be made public for any application to use.
