Hello there.
I've been using Gallery for a while (and integrated it with Movable Type
-my personal site- and with Postnuke -My company's website-) and have
found that some of the features in it could be better exploited and
decided to make a list of features I'd like gallery to have and throw them
in the table and see if any work has been done on any of them by someone
else, if they are planned for Version 2 or if I should start putting them
together for 1.x :)
-Ratings for pictures: Easy to configure and accesible from within the
picture itself and from the album thumbnail listing. This could later be
used to delete non-popular pictures or to hold contests (I used the
ratings system already to design a calendar having people select 14
pictures from an album of several hundred, the loudest complaint I heard
was not being able to vote in the album directly and it was a pain to
set-up for me). The best would be to be able to define an album as a
"voting" album or a "ratings" album and the options appear automatically.
-Links of pictures to different albums: Sometimes you want or need to
create an album that contains no actual pictures, but links to pictures in
other albums (same calendar example as above), in this case being able to
link either from those pictures to the "special" album or calling those
pictures from within the album would be great and wouldn't take any space.
-Options to show the user pictures and/or albums changed since their last
visit, tracked either with a user-independent cookie or otherwise.
Likewise the ability to have users be authenticated (non-administrator
users, probably) forever, instead of for 30 minutes.
-Multiple languages in descriptions: Being able to write captions in
several languages and having language be a selectable preference or option
in the pages would help when one has an audience from different countries.
-Descriptions of albums shown within the album: If a user clicks in an
album two levels deep from the tree view he will never see the description
of the album itself, as it's shown in the page containing the album
itself. Either being able to "inherit" the description and show it in the
album itself (the easiest option, as it's just a matter of calling the
field) or being able to write a longer description to show inside the
album.
-"Propertionator" (name taken mimicking the "captionator" one that made it
into the code): Being able to see a view with all the pictures from the
album, "a la" captionator, but being able of editing other properties from
there as well (rotation, highlight, order, caption) with all changes being
sent on submit.
-"See all comments for all albums" option. The hacks out there don't work
(they don't traverse albums properly) or at least "see all comments since
my last visit"..:)
-An interface for Windows XP is in the works. Is anyone up for an
interface with iPhoto from MacOSX?
-Ability to turn a bunch of directories with pictures into so many albums
(or a zipfile with directories into several albums) with an "aftermath"
page where description, names and confirmation are presented to the user.
-A working Gallery remote for MacOSX...;)
-Ability to select thumbnails for movies (from static files, maybe)
Is there a formal (that is, approved) to-do list for Gallery? Is any of
this in it? I don't want to put things in there that'll disappear when 2.x
hits the scene, and knowing myself and the way I *worship* Gallery I'd
throw everything away and use the new version..:)
