Just had a quick look at Ontographics Core
http://ontographics.com/source/index.shtml , which is similar in many
ways to Freemind.
The user interface is generally awful, everything seems to be done via
the mouse, and there are no drop-down menus :-(
However, the display engine has some interesting features, with the
re-orientation of child nodes as more are added, and the fish-eye focus
on only 'nearby' nodes. Something like this might be a nice option for
Freemind :-)
