I use Gimp for that and this feature is in the menu of it.

   OK, I should have mentioned that I'm on Gentoo. I'm an end-user type, so
a GUI is helpful, but I didn't find an emerge for sniper. I did find a very
light little program called xsnap that seems to be pretty cool. Start it,
drag your mouse, another window with the screenshot appears, hit p to save,
get an xpm file. This should serve my purpose very well.

   Can someone recommend a very light program that could open and display an
xpm file? I don't really want something as complicated and large as 'The
Gimp'.

I'm quite surprised no-one has mentioned 'import'. That's the one I tend
to use. It is part of the Imagemagick set of tools (which also includes
the infinitely useful 'display' and 'convert').

These tools are all very nice because they support a large range of
formats for both import and export.

e.g.:
$ import /tmp/screenshot.png
then select an area of screen which will be saved to the png.

or
$ import -window root /tmp/screenshot.jpg
will take a shot of the whole screen, and save it to the JPEG file.

This is handy when combined with a sleep 5&& at the start to give you time
to minimise the term taking the shot, or move to another workspace.

Then you can also:
$ convert file.png file.jpg
$ display file.xpm
$ convert file.xpm file.png
 (or vice-versa).

And if you're into writing documents, this is really handy:
$ convert file.png file.eps

etc etc you get the point.

   Looks interesting, but heavier than one the Gentoo list suggested I look
at called 'xv' which seems to work quite well with xsnap.

   I'll look into Imagemagick one of these days soon. You description makes
it look quite useful.

I use Quick Image Viewer that is really quick and light-weight. It can
be used to display background images in Fluxbox too.

For me it works normally. I compiled it yesterday from CVS and used old
files in .fluxbox for 0.9.4. When I turned from 0.1.14 to 0.9.2 I had
problems with the background picture for the desktop and it is caused by
in the new version fbesetbg is used instead of besetbg. 

Take a look with your favourite editor in the file ~/.fluxbox/init  and
check the line:
session.menuFile:	~/.fluxbox/menu

That's what it reads in my init-file, too...

I have made some experiments: First, I renamed the .fluxbox folder and 
exited fluxbox and started it again. It created another .fluxbox folder 
with files init, keys & menu in it. In THAT init-file reads also: 
"session.menuFile: ~/.fluxbox/menu", and in the menu-file there is some 
applications mentioned, but in the right-click menu I get only the same: 
"xterm/restart/exit". I don't understand, everything seems to be OK, but 
still menu doesn't work :(
I also copied the old 0.1.14 menu-file from my laptop, and tried that, 
but nothing changed.

I hope someone can help me with this...

Maybe something got wrong during the compile. I would change init to:
session.menuFile: home/username/.fluxbox/menu
where username is your username.

If this does not work I would try the compiled fluxbox package at:
http://fluxbox.bottino.com/files/fluxbox-0.9.4-i386-4.tgz

Updating from cvs and recompiling didn't help, so I gave up -temporarily 
only :), and installed the Slackware package. That works fine, thanks 
for the package maker. I'd still like to compile my own some day, but in 
the meantime I'll try to learn to use this new toy :)
